      Conference realignment? Lame

      Conference rivalries? Many gone

      Player loyalty? Gone

fan support of players there every year? Quickly eroding

athletic department budgets and other sports? Many faltering

Bowl games and season has been killed by playoffs

      what’s actually BETTER now?

      being serious

      Besides players checking accounts

Nothing. It’s out of control and poorly thought out, if at all.

Bowl games were killed long before there was NIL. First the BCS made the rest of the bowls irrelevant and eventually made 3 of the 4 BCS bowls irrelevant. From the time I started college the goal of the season was to get to the Rose Bowl. As a student or a season-ticket holder I could always get tickets, and I attended every SC Rose Bowl from Purdue in ’67 to Texas in ’06. And then I took a deliberate pass on the ’07 and ’08 games, because by then the Rose Bowl wasn’t the goal, the BCS Championship Game was the goal, and the Rose Bowl was a consolation prize.

Then the player boycotts made the second-tier bowl games a mockery. For this I blame Christian McCaffrey.

I don’t mind paying the players, and I don’t blame NIL for the lack of player loyalty. For that I blame the portal.

I don’t blame NIL for the conference consolidation and realignment, although I don’t really know who or what to blame for that. I liked college football way better when it was a regional game and the bowl games showcased the best of the regions playing against one another. And you played everyone in your conference every year and still had room for 2 or 3 attractive non-conference games. And if you ended up with a split national championship, big deal.

The old bowl set up was a major reason why college was so different from the nfl, I liked it

I have very fond memories of walking from campus to the Coloseum with my brothre listening to the Michagan-Ohio State game to see which team would face the winner of the game we were attending (USC vs ucla). So much excitement and so much on the line in one day! When victory was certain, we would chant, “Hey, the Rose Bowl!”. Followed by, “You’ll watch us on TV”.

Coaching staffs (here’s looking at you, Alabama Jones) and boosters no longer have to hide paying players and dodge Paul Dee and his regulator posse.

But we didn’t have the spectacle/disgrace of Oregon paying a starting QB $2mil to leave their school and come play backup for them.

Crowning a National Champion via playoffs is better. The rest sucks ass. USC Football is at the top of the ass sucking heap.

The much better solution to the two SEC teams every year was very simple. And I posted it at the time.

The top 8 teams including major conference championships go to the four major bowls. If ND didn’t like it they could join a conference.

The winner of those four bowls play each other in the playoffs with the championship game to be played the Saturday the week before the super bowl.

Would have kept traditions. Would have kept conference championship games.

Would always provide a legit national champion.

We could have all kept pretending this isn’t just a money grubby television show with starring mercenaries. sc
