What was your most disappointing loss/hardest-to-take loss as a football fan?  Both college and pro.

1) Texas Rose Bowl and the Tang Bros. so many game deciding plays that went against us

2) RJ Soward throat cut against Bruins in rose bowl. Think that was in middle of 8/9 game lose streak to our city rivals. That hurt.

3) losing to Utah in P12CG when Caleb went down.

prob cost us a spot in playoff?? Tarnished his Heisman winning year

Easy.

Most disappointing at the time was 1965 SC-UCLA. I was a freshman and looking forward to going to my first Rose Bowl. With 4 minutes to go I had already lit up my victory Tiparillo (so cool). I dressed in black for the next week.

The most disappointing in retrospect was the Rose Bowl game against Texas. So much at stake and so many things went wrong. By then I was mature enough to wear normal clothes after the game, but what a missed opportunity to achieve a three-peat.

In that 65 game after going up 20-16 UCLA got the ball back and was at the SC one yd line to score again, when Prothro told Beban they’re already mad at us and we have to play them again next year so take a knee. Smart advice by Prothro they won again the next year minus Beban.

Until the final whistle of the ’67 game I had serious doubts, as an insecure fan, whether SC could ever beat Prothro.

I was in france in 1998 and i took my girl- a french gal- (we found a bar that was playing the game) penn state vs arizona, we were supposed to be great, and the cats got clobbered. She had finished studying at san angelo in texas  and said your team doesn’t know football.  Lavarr arrington was wrecking us. I had quite a few cinzanos and kronenbourg 1664’s. Fcking embarrassing

That must have been rough, Old Pueblo.

I would think Arizona’s loss to UCLA in 1998 (the year before) would have been worse, keeping your otherwise undefeated ‘Cats from a likely national championship game.

Another bad game that same season for Wildcats (and for my quacks and also for our Bruin friends as well) – the 1998 Dec 5th Hurricane Bowl UCLA vs Miami.

All UCLA had to do was get the W and the following would likely have happened:

– UCLA goes on to play in the national championship game

– Arizona goes on to play in its first ever Rose Bowl game

– Oregon goes on to play Nebraska in its first ever Holiday Bowl (first ever at the time).

Instead, UCLA looses to Wisconsin in the RB.

Your ‘Cats go on to beat Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl earning a 12-1 record (pretty awesome, but not as great as it could have been).

Oregon gets shuffled off to the Aloha Bowl losing to Colorado.

Yeah agree with you, most Disappointing losses were:

1.  2006 Rose Bowl (L) Championship on da line vs Texas, 38-41.  With 5 seconds left, QB Young scores on a scrambling run TD.  Bad D on USC part.  Texas wins the NC.  But, I still feel USC was the better team.  Bush lateral fumble = 14 pt swing for Texas.  And 1:45 mins left, USC 38, Texas 35, 4th and one, Texas stuffs our run play (no Reggie in the play, stupid).  Dat gave Texas great field position which in turn Texas scores da winning TD.  I wanted to cry, it was da saddest day in my life.

2.  2022 PAC 12 Championship (L) vs Utah.  Dang, QB Caleb Williams hurts his hamstring, 1st Qt, but kept playing, passing well (380 yds) but could not run anymore.  CW played with guts.  The culprit was USC D and DC Grinch, he was a big FU.  Utah P = 315 yds, R = 250 yds, 565 T yds.  With the loss, USC did not make the CFP.

For me, the most Shocking losses/upsets were:

1.  2007 (L) to Stanford #25, 23-24.  USC was #1 and a 40 pt favorite in LV odds. Dat game gave me nightmares.

2.  2008 (L) to Oregon St #38, 21-27.  USC #3 was a huge favorite.  Oregon St had 345 T yds on O, with RB, Jaquizz Rogers running wild = 190 yds. On da fip side USC only ran for 75 yds.  I really believe some USC players threw the game on gambling bets.  USC had one of the best D’s in da nation and yet allowed Oregon St an unbelievable offensive night.  This loss made me sick for a couple of days.

Yep, The 2003 Oregon State loss was brutal. Kept us out of the natty game later in year

the 41 point underdog Stanford cardinals Hail Mary Johnny Morton type play was a brutal loss. Harbaugh got Pete for first time….and it wouldn’t be the last as we know

For UW, the answer is simple. The 1982 Apple Cup. UW going into that game sat at 9-1 and only needing a win to secure the Pac-10 title and invite to the Rose Bowl, but lost to (in Pullman) a bad 2-7-1 WSU team. PK Chuck Nelson missed a FG (over the goal post) for his only miss of the season late in the game that would have given UW the lead.

I was going to say exactly that, any loss to UCLA has been really hard to swallow. The 8 game losing streak was absolutely pissing me off. 13-9 hurt more than even the RB loss to Texas. Both cost us a national championship. So many great wins for my Trojans. I walked around Miami like a boss in both Orange Bowl games, walking out of Auburn with my head high was incredible. The Bush Push game spiked my heart rate to (probably) dangerous levels. Man that was awesome. Big time road wins are a great experience. A Trojan conquest in Feindesland is an incomparable feeling. Hearing Conquest. I’m ready for football season.

Back in 2006, watching Radio go into prevent and allowing Notre Dame to Riverdance 80 yards down the field in 3 plays for the win was probably one of the biggest kick in the nuts ever.

Oregon has tons of these.

Obviously our two national championship losses were hard to take.  But just being there at those games (at least for some of us quacks, right TEE?) was pretty amazing.  Just try to imagine if you went to college not even ever thinking you’d ever even make a Rose Bowl game in your lifetime after not having been there since 1958, and then finding yourself in TWO national championship games not 5 years apart….

Probably the worst losses were actually:

– #2 Oregon losing Dennis Dixon in the Arizona game in 20o7.  With him we very likely go on to beat Arizona, ASU, and UCLA, Dixon wins the Heisman, and Oregon very possibly wins the national championship game that year vs tOSU or LSU.  Nobody could stop Oregon.  Only Dennis’ injured knee could do that.

– Losing to Stanford on a controversial call (Ertz’s catch was not a TD!!) in 2012 as the #1 team in the nation.  Basically all Oregon had to do was beat Stanford at home (and then the Beavs) to go undefeated and play ND in the national championship game that year – a game Oregon no way loses to ND.

Oh well.  I’m sure more bad losses are coming for my quacks….lol!

I remember watching that Thursday night game.  At the time, SC appeared hopelessly out of the Rose Bowl race, having already lost to Stanford and Oregon.  Naturally, I was pulling for Oregon to lose, but even after they lost they still owned the tiebreaker over SC.

The next weekend (Thanksgiving) I was in New York, kinda trying to follow the Oregon-UCLA game in pre-iPhone days.  While waiting for a dinner table I somehow heard the final score (16-0, UCLA) and I was stunned.  The next week, SC beat the Bruins in the Coliseum and got the Rose Bowl bid against……Illinois.  I was so excited I passed on my opportunity to buy tickets.

One that still bugs me was a game at the RB when Smith was coach. ucla kicked off and nobody on the SC team fielded the live ball. ucla recovered very deep in our territory. Our D kept them out of the EZ, but they kicked a FG and ultimately won by 2pts.
