ParticipantWatch #4, he is a factor. Oregon didn’t want to pay what was needed to get Stewart. USC did. I remember Riley saying that Stewart could do things on defense that no one else on the team can do. Injuries are the question mark. Defense still gives up too many big plays on third down. But holding them to 63 total rushing yards and only two field goals in the second half was nice. Good job Patterson and the D.

ParticipantIt’s so obvious I almost don’t want to mention but man were decent on 3rd down but we are getting killed on 4th down. It’s often short distance which is another issue/component.
We need more TFLs and sacks to stay away from 4th and short.
Thanos has been KEY there! ✌️

KeymasterThe nickel is the key to the Gary Patterson defense.
in my opinion and observation urlacher and graham are very quick and fast lb and slow safeties. Which is obvious but what that means is that teams have been able to isolate on the nickel in pass coverage and exploit USC repeatedly.
in running situations or even short passes the quickness of the nickels has not proven a detriment yet. You’d think they’d get run over or blocked at their size but thus far they’ve helped in the run game and hurt in pass coverage. I don’t think this is what Patterson envisions but maybe it’s a work in progress.
I keep being reminded of what ND people said when they noted urlacher would never start for them as a safety as his pass coverage abilities lack at this level
