Nice gets by the Bruin staff. No one should be surprised by the recent recruiting success in Westwood. A good coach is going to leverage the fact that he is brand new and disassociate from the struggles of the past. UCLA has plenty of positives to sell besides the obvious, location and playing time.

What is surprising to me is that Oregon is getting shut out in California recruiting. Califlock is a thing of the past and I’m not sure why. USC beating the Duck out of Oregon for recruits should surprise no one but UCLA locking them out is a mystery given the NIL war chest imbalance. USC’s limited number of rides also bodes well for UCLA.

What is surprising to me, BB, is that most Trojan fans fail to understand that a good part of the reason for USC’s success over Oregon in recruiting your local state is that SC is willing to spend more for local CA talent than Oregon is.

Oregon is not willing to do so.

Fine, USC wants to overspend to keep kids in So Cal?  Great, we’ll go to:

      Oklahoma

      North Carolina

      Arizona

      Texas (x2)

      Alabama (x2)

      Pennsylvania

      Utah

      Oregon

      etc.

and, yes, occasionally California, if (as Mr Barker would say) the price is right….

….to get ours – and without any such USC premium attached.

My quacks are on no mission to say they are building a fence around one state.  (Oregon already has landed, and routinely lands, the #1 recruit in Oregon, not that it matters much…lol)

Instead, I guess you could say Oregon is building a fence around…….the good ol’ US of A. 🙂

LA, I am not aware of SC overspending on CA players.  Last year maybe, but I don’t believe it’s happening with the current 2027 class.  Cali players can stay in LA area and have the great weather and the beaches to enjoy and watch the Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, Angels, Rams and Chargers if they want.  If they choose Eugene they can enjoy the 6th Street Grill and smoke weed. LOL!

Except it’s not just USC beating the feathers off you in California recruiting. It’s UCLA, it’s Cal, It’s ATM, It’s UW. USC is taking the best players but Oregon is not even in the competition for the  next level of talent.  Something else is happening.

Of the top 100 players i n California Oregon has one and he isn’t even from SoCal. UCLA has 7, Cal has 6, UW has 5, Oklahoma has 4, Ohio State,  Georgia, ATM, BYU, Nebbie all are taking USC’s leftovers but Oregon is being outbid by USC ? I don’t think so. Oregon has only ever been good when it has a bunch of California players.
Oregon may have burned itself with California players by recruiting over them. The word in California is that Oregon doesn’t develop talent. You’re watching the window close in real time LAD.

        1.  Happy to re-address this in December with you, BB.  Just like last year when Oregon was doing so poorly in recruiting everyone (ie mainly Trojans + TEE) were wondering what the frack was going on with Oregon’s recruiting?  Per 247, Oregon ended up #2 in the nation in 2026 recruiting, right behind your fav team. 🙂

        2. We aren’t competing head to head with other teams as much as with USC.  There is some overlap with a few (kudos to UCLA on their recent resurgence in recruiting!), and now specifically with Cal since their new head coach had currently coached at Oregon and has contact with some of our targets, of course, and where he can offer immediate playing time.  We’ll steal a few from our Husky friends now and then.  Or they will overpay for guys like Kodi Greene to make a “splash”.  Oregon’s brand and recruiting reach has grown since the old Bellotti/Chip days, thanks initially to Mario and now to Lanning.  Sure, would be great to land more CA kids, but not at the price of overpaying for them.

        3. I think the word in California should be, if you’re not good enough, you won’t play at Oregon, thus the reason for unceremoniously shedding so many previous 4-star CA recruits.  You could easily say their panties are in a collective bunch.  Oregon still has yet to lose a starting player to the portal.  And Oregon has been and is among the tops in the nation in the # of recruits who are drafted into the NFL.

I think the real story here is that Oregon is recruiting such solid players (look at the 3 of our true frosh who started last year for a team that made the semi-finals), it isn’t developing those players who aren’t good enough to develop.  And those players are upset and complaining about it….lol!

There are worse problems to have in college football, ya know, BB?  Like for instance….um…..ok, no, not going there, friend… 🙂

Good post LAD. I’m sure Oregon will be ok with recruiting this year when all is said and done.
Let’s not forget that it was Oregon that started the irresponsible over spending on high school players. So please don’t complain when the king of the hill shows up with bigger bags and establishes dominance. USC took a minute but finally has its money right.

The way down the ladder of success is sometimes a slow process but my eagle eye and uncanny gift for detecting trends is on high alert as I watch the happenings in Eugene.
        To be continued….

lol….agreed, BB.  Let’s wait and see.

USC definitely has their stuff together these days and should challenge going forward – I’ve always said the real sleeping giant from the good ol’ Pac-8/10 is somewhere much closer to Figueroa than Montlake.

Oregon is simply taking the place of where Washington stood back in the good ol’ days.

As we see from our own conference history, there’s room for several challengers on the west coast.

Hey, based on current rumblings, maybe UCLA, too, just like way back when?  🙂

        Very smart take. Good post

And I didn’t know that the CA kids have not really lit the world on fire up there but I have noticed the transfers out…

———-that’s precisely the idea.  Go get your talent elsewhere.  You have to anyway.  Meaning can’t get it from oregon.  So USC is moving you homeless to another block

BB, what makes UCLA’s recruiting success even more remarkable is they haven’t even hosted one official visit yet.

Ok. Then explain it for a dumb guy like me can understand. How and why? In the NIL era

Dena, do you remember when Pete Carroll was first hired? His relentless energy, optimism and enthusiasm started attracting
high end recruits. Chesney has those same personality traits. Both are/were also relentless recruiters along with
their respective coaching and support staffs.

Lol. You really believe that’s all it is?  A poor kid ain’t gonna take $500k at 17 because they like the coach’s smile and a perennially losing FB team?  I mean it’s a take….

So what is the proper way to recruit in today’s NIL landscape?  Tell us, oh knowledgeable one.  What is USC doing that is so pure and righteous? What are the Bruins doing with their current recruiting that is so below your standards of college football excellence?  Please, by all means…you have the floor.

Cutting checks or at least making financial promises aka IOUs

call me crazy 😝 but I understand promising a $250k check (annually) always helps

finacially my argument makes alot more sense then yours

The correct answer would be “get them to sign on the line which is dotted”.  The rest doesn’t mean a thing.

        Valid.

I’m just pointing out comparing this guy to pre NIL era Pete is incomplete. Not completely off base but also missing a lot

The only difference between the two is the money is no longer delivered in a paper bag at midnight in MacArthur park.

That’s the only difference between Pete and Chesney?

Pete was a Super Bowl winning defensive coordinator and a head coach of two NFL franchises before he got to USC. That’s just for starters.

I understand the optimism given the great week you guys just had but the comparison seems out of whack and way premature. But it is spring and spring hopes eternal in the human breast-Alexander Pope.

Pete came to USC as a third or fourth choice and USC fans were not thrilled at all when it happened.  He obviously won you guys over quickly, but to say he came down to you on some beam of light from the football heavens is a bit “revised”.

Yep true. Carroll was an NFL reject when we hired him.

the INITIAL comp is better then BB is admitting. What Pete achieved at USC was legendary.  Thats a mountain BC is trying to climb

Bruddah LA Duck I want to chime in with your post about Oregon’s recruiting strategy.  No question you guys, coaches and GM have done a Great job of player evaluation, development and landing top FB players.  Yep, you guys are a National R power house (getting players from all across America). Money is a big reason, but there are other things.  Your coaches and GM are Xlent talent evaluators, targeting A+ FB players.  Heck, every year your coaching staff is top 5 in nation.  You guys have been fortunate when a HC leaves, your replacement have been good hires (complete coaching staff).  (Unlike USC, BS hires has been a big problem).

Your state of art sport facilities is a Big Plus.  Also, having 15 different nice uniforms is a plus as well.  In short, I believe Uncle Phil’s money is a big reason for Oregon’s FB success, but there are many other things why you’re getting top FB players.  I have great respect of Oregon’s FB program (since da late 90’s to now).  In my eyes, no question you guys are a Power House FB program.  Congrats Duckies…  Cheers
