ParticipantDestroying old rivalries and not creating any new ones. You can’t do that with an 18-team conference playing a 9-game schedule.
The week-before-Thanksgiving rivalries will remain: SC-UCLA, Michigan-Ohio State, Alabama-Auburn, etc., and A&M-Texas (but only because they’re now back in the same conference).
But SC and Ohio State, for example, are never going to be scheduled against one another often enough to create a real rivalry. They’ll each visit the other once every 6-8 years. That’ll serve to drive up ticket prices but otherwise it’ll be just another conference game.
A small thing, probably, but I miss seeing a visiting team’s band once or twice a year. I always liked the Cal band’s pre-game show and looked forward to the Stanford game for the countermarch Art Bartner did whenever Stanford was in the building. It would be nice if the best of the B1G bands traveled.

ParticipantSEC has 16 teams vs Big10’s 18. Primary issue w/ BIG 10 imho is the geographical spread. Not many people in NJ or Michoacan care about ucla or usc. Some of them even confuse the two teams. Lots of west coast fans confuse ole miss with miss state. The net is just too wide. I was in KC right after the Bush Leinart Lendale years and I had people telling me that Missouri would crush USC. Most people just don’t care or know outside their region.

ParticipantI agree with you on the geography. Just as Marylanders don’t care about the West Coast, I don’t give a damn about Rutgers or Maryland football. Why should they be in the same conference as SC?
And although I think the B1G is the worst in terms of size — 18 teams without divisions is just too big, sorry — the ACC is worse in terms of geography. How long before Cal and Clemson become “I-hope-they-die” rivals?
