The one thing that concerned me the most

about Saturday’s game was the fact that we got very little pressure on the QB. Some negative yardage runs (like that key red zone play) and some forced throws, but one sack? Against San Jose St? That will be a problem if we can’t get pressure against teams with legit OL. I know we shuffled the lineup a bit and it’s Patterson’s first game, but against San Jose St we should have had enough talent to get a couple of sacks.

Also I know we will never be a running team, but 36 throws to 39 runs; I would have liked to see that number with even more runs. But that’s just a personal preference, not really a gripe.

eta – the attendance was embarrassing. I had family at the game, and they all said it was really bad. Several empty seats around them and they were around 10-15 rows back 35-yard line. I was in tejas, so…

The attendance is a big nothing burger, wtf cares? It was San Jose State. I missed this one too. I haven’t missed a season opener in many, many years. I have been to a bunch of mid day early season games, I know EXACTLY what to expect. Sorry couldn’t do it. Interesting the guy whining the most about attendance wasn’t there either and probably won’t go to ANY games. If we played Ohio State, Oregon, or ANY other conference opponent I would  have been there and so would 80k+ others .

Yeah, some red flags for sure. I think the D line was solid against the run but the Spartans were forced to throw a lot because of the score so it’s hard to say. The secondary was the head scratcher for me. We got beat deep in the first quarter with starters in the game. And it kept happening throughout the game. What happened to our vaunted depth in the secondary? The positive? A lot of guys got game tape and game experience, now they have to build from that. And the coaches got to see who is ready. Tge freshmen, another positive. Oodles of talent. The future is bright.

DC Patterson sure as heck looked engaged on the sideline. He showed some fire in the belly. Had a shutout going for almost three quarters until the 2’s and 3’s let him down.

The offense is legit, 28-0 in the first half and we ran at will. We got yardage when we had to and when the defense knew we were going to run. Oline looks legit, RB are legit, WR’ s found a star in Mosley. Pair him with Tanook and wow. Bowman is as advertised but 99.9% of us know the offense isn’t an issue.

Mosley looked every bit as good as advertised, and more. Surprised Boobie only had one catch, but yes. USC will always have WR’s, and Mosley looks like the next in line. He showed some really solid moves and doesn’t play like he’s 5’10”. Not at all. When Tanook comes back it will be scary; throw in some more plays to Bowman and look out. Glad to see Waymo looking like he never left, albeit limited carries. I’m sure the O left a lot in the playbook/ No sense pulling a Kiff (against Colorado no less) and having the backup QB wear the punters uniform just to get a 2-point conversion.

Agree to disagree on the attendance, it was pretty poor. Not the end of the world and I’m not going to dwell on it anymore, but it was not a good look. I’m hoping the secondary was a matter of playing multiple guys and trying to figure it out. If they play this bad come game 3 it’s time to really worry imo. Lots of room to improve, for sure.

Yeah, the offense was pretty vanilla as it should be. Riley knows not to put too much on tape. He pulled the starters out earlier than I would have expected too, which I liked. No sense having someone injured.
Attendance will be tested again with a Friday night game. I will be there for this one with the fam. 6 of us, we need another 69,994 of you to show up or stfu.

“Yeah, the offense was pretty vanilla as it should be” Yeah, but that 1% will complain that we didn’t get Bowman involved enough in the passing game. The by far biggest positive of the game was Mosley. Unreal that he is only 5’10”, dude looks like a true baller. Throw in the punt returns and he should be fun to watch.

What surprised me is that the “official” number was reported as 51k. Most have been a good number of those in the mezzanine watching the monitors and buying beer lol. tbh this year’s home schedule is one of the weaker we’ve had in a while. Yes, we have Ohio State and the quacks, but there’s a fair amount of fluff there. I get it, the conference is tough as it is and we didn’t schedule and non-FBS schools. It’s not an SEC OOC schedule at least.

BUT I will say this.  Good on Chad Bowden.  This guy was headed where?  Miami?  ND?  And USC turned him, and also Dixon Wyatt.  Both of those guys are HUGE gets and good for Bowden to snag them

SJSU was playing with 48 new players. Also, is my memory failing, or did it seem like SJSU had tighter coverage of our receivers than we had on theirs?

Of the 11 players who caught at least one pass, only 4 of them caught passes at SC before, and they had a total of 9 catches prior to Saturday – all of them last year. Lots of new faces for USC too. And in key positions like TE, WR 1 & 2 (at least for Sat). Not to mention the defense.

Bruddah Bob, spot on.  Hell, on those short out throws, SJS DB’s nailed our Wr’s as soon they caught ball.  SJS DB’s played tight, very quick reaction, very physical boys, tackled well.  Yeah, DC Patterson can’t be please with his secondary.  He has to show the game tape to his DB’s.  They will see their shortfalls.  The DB’s must work and practice harder…   Cheers
