From the first game. Then again, we played base defense almost all game against the Spartans. Vanilla. Last night we saw corner blitzes that were very effective, gap control and pressure up the middle. Safeties looked much better. Biggest play of the game was Maiava getting up after the tackle where he landed on his shoulder. What a tough kid, but please no RPO. Our season is cooked without him.

You see the player rally around Patterson when the shutout was confirmed? Really good sign of team chemistry. #9 Uhrlacher showed speed and physicality. The run game defense still has work to do but you saw Patterson’s gray hair experience show up with disguising the blitzes. The pressure on the QB made the secondary look better. We gotta keep improving because the schedule gets tough. We are a different team at home and we have some big games at home. The corner blitzes worked all night.

He also criticized Riley for taking him out in the 4th quarter. It is clear Maiava is the key to our season. Protect him at all costs.

What’s interesting is that articles over the summer said the nickel will be the most noticeable change on the USC D.

That this position is the key in the 4-2-5.  Which interestingly I think is the same d Fresno and sjsu run.

anyway the articles said the ability to find someone flexible enough to play it and play it well is the key to Pattersons d and will determine if he’s successful at usc.   Looks like they have urlacher and graham playing it.  Hybrid safety lb types.  A grootegood type

A lot of teams.  Even usc under grinch and Lynn I think.  Used the nickel as a 3rd corner.  This is different.  This is a little more like what Pete Carroll liked to do

Yep, corner blitzes were a Pete staple. We saw Uhrlacher, and Graham blitz effectively from the corner.

Very good take Bruddah Java.  What a difference from the SJ St game.  Let’s hope the D will continue to improve and play hard nose FB.  The Big Games are coming up soon.  Love seeing the sideline energy of DC Patterson.  He is a fiery, 66 yrs old dude; his players feeds off his energy… Cheers
