ParticipantI was a year behind him in high school in Fresno. Saw him play both football and basketball. A man amongst boys. He and ex-USC linebacker Charles Anthony were teammates at Edison. Scary looking over the line of scrimmage and see those two looking at you I would think.
I met Young at a preseason Edison High football dinner. Edison was coached at the time by Tim McDonald (another USC AA). Young made it a point to go by every table and shake hands with those in attendance. Pure class. If I remember right his nick-name then was “Tree. If I remember right lol.
Condolences to his family and friends. A very, very good man.

ParticipantAw another USC AA passing. May the great Charlie Young RIP, I will say a prayer for him and his family. Man, Charlie Young is top 4 (Tony Gonzales, Brock Bowers, Mark Bowman) All Time TE from the CIF HS. I will always remember him giving crushing blocks and making key pass receptions for USC.
Eh, Bruddah Fresno Mike, confused with what you wrote: I met Young at a preseason Edison High football dinner. Edison was coached at the time by Tim McDonald (another USC AA). Tim McDonald is about 14 years younger than Charlie and could not have been Edison’s coach. Charlie 1969 Edison grad, McDonald 1983 Edison grad… Cheers
Correction. My Bad Bruddah Fresno Mike, I get it you met Charlie at a Edison HS dinner when Tim McDonald was their HC. I did not realize McDonald went back to Edison to be their HC after his NFL days. Sorry about dat. I got it now… Cheers

ParticipantYeah. Glad you caught it. My son played at Edison. One of two white boys on the team his soph year. Played for Tim and then Tim hired him as his QB coach while he went to Fresno State.
My son, like me, is a huge ND fan…I cursed him lol. Matt Johnson (Tim’s teammate at USC and business partner in Fresno) was Tim’ s assistant coach and there was a lot of good-natured ribbing going back and forth during the ND-USC game week.
Back in Young’s time USC had Fresno locked up with most of the great high school players. Young, Anthony, Monte Doris, Pat Howell to name a few. Tough kids back then.

ParticipantBruddah, Coach like your story, thanxs for sharing. I did not know you’re a ND fan. Thought your alma mater is Oregon; you talked about your Oregon days a lot over here. And, coached tennis at Fresno St, your hometown school. No wonder you know so much about the Khalil Terry ND de-commitment to UCLA deal. OK, I see the connection, you’re a ND fan. And, no wonder you hardly post here, you’re at the ND board.
How did you become a ND fan? Google search, Oregon played ND 2 times, 1976 and 1982 (I do not remember the games), Oregon loss both games, 0-41 and 6-13. Who did you root for?
No kidding, over da decades Fresno HS’s play very physical FB. I follow HS sports and attest Fresno HS’s have tuff, hard hitting FB teams. USC used to get Fresno’s top players, but not lately. OU-Oklahoma, Oregon, Cal, UDub, Fresno St, Sacramento St have inside R connection. And, the 2nd group ASU, Zona and UCLA R Fresno well. I hope GM Bowden starts R Fresno HS’s again. Central East is a power school these days, saw them the last 2 years in the State CIF Championship game, D-3. Dat’s a very good FB team.
Brah, don’t be a stranger over here. WW is not only a USC board, even though the founder and owner, Bruddah Java is a USC grad. Shoot, we have Oregon & UCLA fans as well. Love to hear Notre Dame news, rumors and stories. It’s always good talking to you Coach Fresno Mike; you’re one good Bruddah. Shaka Brah! Cheers
PS. I started posting tennis news over at the Other Sports forum. It would be nice to see you posting some tennis stuff too. Ethan Quinn has rapidly climbed da rankings, going from #477 to now #48 in world in 2 years (very impressive). He has a big game (hard 1st serves + big ground strokes), but needs to clean up unforced errors, play more consistent (keep up da rallies and win points), and get more fit/stronger. If he does all those things, Ethan should make Top 25 rankings next year.
