Quick thoughts on USC’s So Cal recruiting success vs Oregon’s

This post is not to diminish what USC has done in figuring out the recruiting game (called $$$ plus brilliantly hiring Chad Bowden away from ND) with a #1 recruiting class last year and likely a top 5 class this year.  Congrats!!!  Honestly.

But….just to provide an “enemy’s” perspective, what we see (and what we have confirmed from a few recruits as well as friends/relatives of recruits) is that USC is generally overspending for the local California talent to keep them in So Cal.

Although I suppose they could, Oregon is not into overspending for recruits specifically in So Cal compared to other regions, and instead generally pays more for portal acquisitions and for retaining players (thus confirming why Lanning has yet to lose a starter to the portal).

At one point both Fielder and Honor and Danny Lang were quacks or looking like Oregon’s to lose.  Something changed.  That something is $$$.

Makes total sense to me why USC’s strategy would be to build a fence around So Cal despite the cost.  Right now 4 of your 5 verbals are from So Cal, with likely at least 2 more from So Cal to verbal soon (Fielder and Lang).

I wish Oregon had a large number of quality football talent in the PNW.  We generally take the best player in Oregon and maybe 2 or 3 from the Seattle area at best.  Having such a fertile area in which to recruit locally like USC does really helps in not losing players to homesickness which Oregon suffers from almost every year.

As a result, I expect our teams to be more competitive going forward – and that’s a good thing, yes?  See you guys on Sept 26th!! 🙂

USC has no shortage of fans willing to put money into NIL as long as the wins come.  I wish UCLA did too, but most recent alumni are back overseas and watching whatever sport their country allows them.  I am personally not a big NIL fan, just feels dirty, and “old south” to me.  And at the end of the day you are just dumping money into something that is likely going to cause an increase in ticket prices, etc. if it works out well, so it is a cycle of inflation.  Would rather just donate to wherever my kids are, or end up going.

I don’t know if USC is overpaying or not, that remains to be seen, considering we really only have last year’s class to go by. We didn’t overpay for Caleb, and Addison complained that he didn’t get what he was promised. For last year’s class we definitely brought out the big wallet and bagged the top ranked class. This year’s class, it looks like we might be paying big again but it’s going to be a small class. The big money will be used to re sign last year’s group. The Ducks started the arms race by paying big from the start so you should not be surprised when you get beat at your own game.

Southern California is important to Oregon and we are cutting your legs off for sure. USC is making a point. Let’s also recognize that there is a lot of money around USC and we are finally using it.

All of college football should be concerned.

Not at all surprised about the arms race, just surprised it took you Trojans this long to figure things out.  My guess is your playoff drought ends soon.

If you had told me on this board back in 2005, the next championship opportunity USC would get wouldn’t be for over 20 years from then, I would have thought you were bat-sh|t crazy.

GM Bowden is a God send.  He has da right strategy focusing on Calif top players and out bidding other schools.  Build a big fence, just like what C. McKay, C.PC and C.Robinson did.  I believe in our Cali FB boys and think we can win da B1G and maybe NC with a roster full of Cali boys.

But, Oregon will still get their share, along with UDub, Ohio St, Texas, Texas AM, LSU are major players for Calif talent.  By next year, UCLA will be a force too.

The big Key is DC Patterson.  Hope he turns the soft D culture into a hard nose group, just like Indiana, Ohio St, ND, UGA, Miami, Oregon, Iowa, Michigan, LSU, Ole Miss, Vandy and UDub..  Thanxs Mucho Bruddah Balls for your Xlent views about our recent R under GM Bowden.

Yes sir,,,,  USC paying 10M+ a year for an offensive coordinator.  I’ll always give him credit for his offensive system, and more specifically, his ability to develop and work each QB into his system.

Yes because oregon has never been known to buy players with fancy locker rooms, video consoles or toys.

Oregon was never backed by a billionaire who risked the program by spending money before the NCAA had really approved the process, while other teams, including USC, waited to see what would be allowed.

Oregon is prudent Relying on their superior academic standards. Oregon would never try to buy players or pull cheap stunts like cash for players funneled through coaches in Texas. Or billboards screaming “look at me” in LA or NY. Or changing uniforms 8 times a year like a 6 year old girl trying to get Daddy’s attention.

Yeah, Oregon is above all that.
