More on the dismissal of Jarmond.

This is a very positive move for UCLA athletics. That may not even fully do it justice. Jarmond had many deficits as an athletic director that we’ve enumerated many times. From what we’ve heard and seen, he was an inconsistent fundraiser, was slow to react to changes in the college sports competitive landscape, was far too conservative with respect to NIL, largely did not build goodwill with his coaches or athletic department staffers, and hopelessly mismanaged his most important program in football.

He was, unfortunately, very ill-suited to the job of being a modern college administrator. Even his one touch of modernity, being fairly active on social media, eroded over time as criticism mounted. Previously very active on Twitter, he hadn’t posted on the platform in more than two years, since before DeShaun Foster’s first game as the head coach, until this past weekend. On Instagram, where he is far more active, he has posted just four times in the last year. From what we know from personal experience and the recollections of fans and donors who interacted with him, he was very thin-skinned, struggling to deal with the realities of being the very public face of a scrutinized athletic department.

One of his most significant deficits was in fundraising and adapting to the changing landscape of college athletics. UCLA’s NIL position has continued to grow, but it’s thanks largely to the coaches and the work of Ken Graiwer, the head of Champion of Westwood. Jarmond’s athletic department has often been behind the times in accepting the reality of NIL, whether it was directing donors to not give to NIL and instead fund the Wooden Athletic Fund, or taking every new development in the world of revenue sharing as a sign that NIL was going away. At virtually every turn, the Jarmond-led AD has relied on a strategy of hope that things would return to some level of pre-NIL normality, which was (and likely is) never going to happen.
