ParticipantAs a HC and all facets of a team
I say worse
it’s weird one similarity is the longer they have the job the more untimely 15 yard penalties the team has. It’s an uncanny coincidence

KeymasterClay Helton was 38-21 with a far weaker schedule and conference. His last recruiting class or two were abysmal.
Riley is 40-19 in the Big Ten and his last recruiting class was nationally top ranked. Many of those recruits are on the field now.
so yes. Riley is better

ParticipantI’m going to reframe your question.
Who was the bigger failure, Helton or Riley?
Answer: Riley, by a mile.
Helton came with no expectations, justifiably so. I, like many, hated the hire because Helton had nothing in his background to recommend him for the position. He had never been a head coach anywhere, and he had never coached with, or under, any coach of note. Riley came with the highest of expectations, and justifiably so. He had played or coached under two legends and had a successful track record as a head coach. Helton had no pretensions of being an elite coach; Riley did, but no more.
Helton coached at a time when getting to the playoffs meant being voted one of the top 4 in the country at the end of the regular season. Riley coached in the same system his first two years but now only has to produce a top-12 team to get there, and he has only come close once. In his defense, SC would have beaten Utah in the CCG in 2022 but for Willams’s hamstring injury. On the flip side, Riley produced a 7-5 season with a Heisman winner at QB.
None of Riley’s teams noticeably improved over the course of a season. At least you could say Helton’s 2016 team improved after he pulled Max Browne and inserted Darnold as the starting QB. 1-2 vs. 9-1, including two Top-5 wins. Riley has only 5 Top-25 wins in 4 1/2 years. I can’t think of any that were Top-5.
So which coach has produced the wider gap between expectations and results, Helton or Riley? I say it’s an easy call.

ParticipantThere was nothing good about Hugs. My nick by the way. The ONLY reason he was at USC to do anything was as a payback to Hug’s dad from to Lane Kiffin’s dad. He was hired as a do nothing no show coach who’s only duties were to pick up other coach’s dry cleaning, and bring donuts to meetings. His only roll as far as the team went was to deal with kid’s that were homesick and had other personal issues. He has never been good at anything. He sucked as a player. His daddy kept getting him jobs as an assistant. Think of Brendon Carroll (coaches called him spalding) and the disaster he was for the Raiders just last season.
Lincoln Rilley is a proven quarterback guru and a decent offensive coordinator. He just sucks at a head coach. Hugs sucked and continues to suck at everything. sc
