KeymasterKalen De Boer
history with Jenn. Doesn’t like Alabama and being criticized for a 10-11 win season. Family likes the west coast.
is this an upgrade? Im not sure

ParticipantIt’s not an upgrade imo. But what do you expect will come from Riley staying next year, assuming this is a 4-5 loss season and based on history, a probable bowl loss? Next year the excuse will be a new QB. So, is two more years the new goal now? By then it’s a fair guess that a lot of the young DL will have transferred due to wanting to win more games/ get nfl exposure and 1/2 of the stud WR’s will have transferred due to playing time. Indiana has proved that even in the transfer era you don’t have to wait 5+ years to win. But sounds like that is what you are asking for – 6? Keeping a coach to keep young players is a tough strategy in today’s game when kids can and do leave at the drop of a hat. Might have made sense ten years ago, not now. How many years do you think riley should get?

KeymasterIndiana is one of 130 d1 programs. Every year there’s an Indiana but no one has done what they have.
someone wins the lottery every year too. So let’s put all our money in that. No. A more stable way is to save and invest.
in building a program you have recruiting. Facilities. Coaching. I think usc has slowly been doing these things. Jenn saw they needed new facilities. Probably already in the works. They just opened and we won’t see those results for awhile
muscle replaced their s and c coach last year. Again. Part of the build.
after years of coaches recruiting. Last year they brought in an entire recruiting staff and program. It’s paid off. But freshmen don’t win NC. Cig uses 25 year olds. Unique. Creative. But im not sure that’s sustainable. It’s his approach.
Usc wants to build and recruit like notre dame. Hs kids who stay 3-4 years. Now 5.
continuing to start over doesn’t help
do I think a new qb can do well? Sure do. Their wr are all young. Many dl are too and their whole secondary is raw. Freeman te. Wr and they appear to like their young rb group. Think they have a few young OL too and a very good coach
overreacting to one game isn’t my style. Maybe it’s others.
is Gary Patterson the answer? People who keep wanting to fire the coach are getting their Way. I’ve seen so many usc DC come through from Helton to Riley I can’t name them all. Monty. And that former cal guy and grinch. Lynn. Patterson. At some point it’s not them right?
they are a good team and they are a top 15-20 team. Can they climb into the top 5-10? Dunno. But absolutely won’t happen this decade if they gut the program. Again

ParticipantThose are (mostly) fair points. But I ask again – what’s your expectation next year and two years from now? Since you think he should stay. Or, if that’s hard to answer since we don’t yet know how this season will finish – how many years do you think he should get and what would be your floor? Changing HC’s always isn’t good, but sometimes keeping an underperforming one too long is worse.

KeymasterI think the present group of freshmen should play as juniors. Or redshirt soph.
Thats not a lot of time but it would be 7 years and that’s enough for a coach to establish. Make mistakes and progress. I also think 8-4 in the big ten is like 10-2 in the pac.
So if a team is going 9-3 in this conference imo they are doing pretty well. 9-3 average. Occasional 11-1 a few 10-2 and occasional 7-5 and 8-4 and you keep your job imo
he’s not far off of that

ParticipantMy rule of thumb is that a truly elite coach, no matter where he goes, will win big by his third season there.
BTW, is there such a thing as redshirts anymore?

ParticipantKdB had a great record before Washington
but yeah Alabama has changed his story for sure
I want a guy who runs the rock and plays tough D.
Does he fit that bill?
Riley is gone unless he has a miraculous finish. Has to happen. For everybody. And I’m 50-50. Means he’s failed. That will never make me happy. I hoped he was a homerun. I was wrong. I’ll start another thread as to why he failed

KeymasterDoes kalen? Dunno.
but usc has had Monte kiff. Had that former cal guy. Grinch. Lynn. How many dc you gonna run through?
theyre building talent. As to usc. My opinion is you dont Fire 9 win coaches. Nebraska firing solich was a mistake and began a long trip through the wilderness. Ohio state firing earl Bruce was a similar mistake. We can come up with many other examples. I think if a coach is winning 9 games you keep tweaking and adjusting to get over the hump. Especially if he’s winning 9 playin g in the b10

ParticipantChanging DC’s isn’t the answer, building a more physical team that can actually practice against a physical OLINE instead of an all-finesse line should help the D. Imagine everyday practicing against finesse football and then seeing nothing but physical offenses (some good some mediocre, but all physical) come game time. I think that’s the main problem here – practices don’t mimic games. I would argue that this style would have worked fine in the old PAC or maybe in the BIG12 today, but no way in hell does it work in the BIG10. Recipe for failure.

Keymasterhere are 5 other names All of whom have serious upside and concerns
Spencer Danielson, Boise State Broncos HC
Rhett Lashlee, SMU Mustangs HC
Glenn Schumann, Georgia Bulldogs DC
Kalani Sitake, BYU Cougars HC
Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State Sun Devils HC
Mix of offensive and D coaches there. Not sure what Danielson is
