Probably the biggest fish  of the old guard drug capos still left is no more. Chapo, Mayo and now Mencho. Mencho leader of the CJNG was hiding in the Sierra Madre mountains where the Mexican military conducted a military operation and killed him along with 7 of his bodyguards. The US was very involved and without doubt had DEA agents on site to observe. The DEA being present in these type of operations has been the norm for probably the last 20 years. The narcos have even military on their payroll so US agents can’t trust them to give the targets a heads up.

The violence you are watching is not so much revenge for the killing but more auditions by criminals to see who takes over the leader role. There is violence in 20 states, each one controlled by a local criminal chief. The one who creates the most mayhem can say, “ see how powerful I am, I should be the new leader”.

Just like the capture of Chapo and Mayo led to internal wars for control of the lucrative war trade, this one will sink Mexico into deeper violence and bloodshed too. Dudes killing each other for the right to be Americas drug dealer. The job pays well but isn’t very long term.

I wouldn’t go to Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco is Menchos base) this week, actually having been there I wouldn’t go at all. I loved the food there, among many great meals,  I had grilled octopus tacos that I still think about six years later. But the beaches were subpar and the sightseeing lacking. Merida, Oaxaca  or Mexico City on the other hand are fantastic.
