Not buying that they “caved” I think this is all theatre to whip up a frenzy and energize their base to go for blood, remove the moderates and go in for the kill.  Hair gel is shapeshifting on the daily to be whatever everyone wants him to be, and the chicks and gay guys will vote for him because they want to bang him and he owns a winery.  This whole thing has been marketed, and quite well.
