Interesting that 2 of these guys were fired at USC. I’m not sure that Whittingham, Elko, Cristobal or Lanning belong on this list. The Bama guy sure fell off but I think he should be on this list.

As I recall Whittingham didn’t have a good record in bowl games. He’s a good coach and he will finally be able to recruit better talent overall at Michigan. IMO Sarkisian doesn’t belong on the list. Good recruiter but lousy coach.

For me.  No on Sark, Elko and Whittingham.  I would add these HC, Yes:  Kalean DeBoer, Bama, Kenny Dillingham, ASU, Joey McGuire Texas Tech.

Extremely subjective, next year’s list will be different depending upon what happens, or doesn’t happen, in the playoffs for the 2026 season.

So I would put these 10 into tiers instead.

Tier 1 – Coaches who have won a natty (because that’s the most important component of being a good head coach, right?)
      Cignetti, Smart, Day

Tier 2 – Coaches who have a good possibility of winning a first-time natty soon for various reasons
      Lanning, Freeman, Cristobal, Kiffin

Tier 3 – Coaches who have been historically good, but might not be as likely to win a natty as others above them for various reasons
      Sarkisian, Elko, Whittingham

Curt, smart and freeman. Then Day.

def not Lanning or sark. That payroll and roster gets you 8-9 wins just showing up. Or at least it did the last few years.

lane is a narcissistic ahole but he does get wins. Gotta give him credit there
