Interesting that 2 of these guys were fired at USC. I’m not sure that Whittingham, Elko, Cristobal or Lanning belong on this list. The Bama guy sure fell off but I think he should be on this list.

      Thoughts :

As I recall Whittingham didn’t have a good record in bowl games. He’s a good coach and he will finally be able to recruit better talent overall at Michigan. IMO Sarkisian doesn’t belong on the list. Good recruiter but lousy coach.

For me.  No on Sark, Elko and Whittingham.  I would add these HC, Yes:  Kalean DeBoer, Bama, Kenny Dillingham, ASU, Joey McGuire Texas Tech.

Extremely subjective, next year’s list will be different depending upon what happens, or doesn’t happen, in the playoffs for the 2026 season.

So I would put these 10 into tiers instead.

Tier 1 – Coaches who have won a natty (because that’s the most important component of being a good head coach, right?)
      Cignetti, Smart, Day

Tier 2 – Coaches who have a good possibility of winning a first-time natty soon for various reasons
      Lanning, Freeman, Cristobal, Kiffin

Tier 3 – Coaches who have been historically good, but might not be as likely to win a natty as others above them for various reasons
      Sarkisian, Elko, Whittingham

Curt, smart and freeman. Then Day.

def not Lanning or sark. That payroll and roster gets you 8-9 wins just showing up. Or at least it did the last few years.

lane is a narcissistic ahole but he does get wins. Gotta give him credit there

And Dillingham has been IMPRESSIVE. His timing into a weak B12 and leaving the stronger P12 was fortuitous. But man he has seized the opportunity.

        Respectfully disagree, Pasadena.

If it were all about the roster only, USC would have made the playoffs at some point these past 12 seasons.

For a young guy who has only been a head coach for 4 seasons and is 48-8 overall with 6 of those losses to teams who either won the national championship or played in the national championship that season, that’s more than just recruiting…..lol.  (The other 2 losses were to rivals, Washington and Oregon State, who ended the season in the top 20.)

But I get it, Lanning is universally disliked by opposing fans, so it’s super easy to dismiss him.

Lanning turned down the Alabama job after losing to Deboer twice in one season.

Bruddah Brad, Lanning turning down Bama = bad rumors.  On record, Lanning even admitted that he was not contacted by Bama or at Bama’s campus (bogus).  Dat goes for C. Smart-UGA.  There were all kinds of SM rumors floating around.  Truth, C. Saban had recommended C. Deboer to Bama’s AD Byrne immediately after his retirement announcement.

Bama taking C. Saban advice made a very quick decision.  Within 2 days of Saban’s retirement announcement, Bama flew C. Deboer out for an interview.  Next day, Bama made him an offer.  2 days of negotiations, C.Deboer became Bama’s new HC.  All dat took 5 quick days.

I think highly of C. Deboer and put him in my Top 10 HC’s.  OK, it’s been a struggle for the last 2 years, but I believe Bama made the right choice in hiring C. Deboer.  I have all da confidence C. Deboer will turn Bama into a NC caliber team again.  Heck, Bama must think so, they just extended his contract.  Shaka…   Cheers

Google per ESPN.  Yes, Kalen DeBoer was a top priority for Alabama. Athletic Director Greg Byrne quickly zeroed in on the former Washington coach following Nick Saban’s retirement in January 2024, interviewing and officially hiring him in less than 49 hours. [1]
While fan and media speculation naturally centered on other big-name coaches already in the Southeastern Conference or established at major programs, Alabama’s administration publicly and privately refuted the idea that DeBoer was a “backup” or secondary option. Byrne’s swift action in flying to Washington immediately after Saban retired highlighted DeBoer’s status as a primary target. [1, 2]
Alabama highly valued DeBoer’s offensive acumen, his ability to build a winning culture at every level of college football, and his recent success in leading the Huskies to the national championship game.

PS.  Heck, I wish we had C. Deboer as our HC. Shaka.  Others I like a lot:  C. Cignetti, C. Kiffin, C. Cristobal, C. Dillingham and C. Fisch.  I can’t wait for the C.LR era Pau-finished, no more…

USC has recruited mostly for a 7 on 7 championship. No beef.

and CLR, before the Chad’s arrived,  had some very poor recruiting results in his tenure so not sure what you’re saying is accurate. Respectfully. 🍻

hasnt Lanning killed it in recruiting? From

        afar that’s what I hear.

Sorry my friend, but there is no way Lanning belongs on that list.  He is not cerebral at all.  He can get his team up emotionally, but he is not a field general coach that can make the adjustments needed when called for.  Just my opinion.  Oregon is where they are because of money not coaching talent.  That money advantage is now shared by quite a few programs.

By your criteria LA Duck, wouldn’t Dabo have to be on the list? Two natties, four national title games.

It’s not my criteria, but seems to be the criteria of the majority on this site.

To a Trojan it seems the ONLY thing that matters is winning a crystal football.

        Period.

Or do I have that wrong? 🙂

HA, the only things SC has done lately is remain bowl eligible, so this Trojan would be satisfied with just getting into the playoffs, which Oregon has had no difficulty doing.  We have some hills to climb LA.  My opinion of Lanning is not great, but it is just one of thousands and doesn’t matter much.
