UCLA Recruiting Not a Huge Surprise

LA, I am not aware of SC overspending on CA players.  Last year maybe, but I don’t believe it’s happening with the current 2027 class.  Cali players can stay in LA area and have the great weather and the beaches to enjoy and watch the Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, Angels, Rams and Chargers if they want.  If they choose Eugene they can enjoy the 6th Street Grill and smoke weed. LOL!

1.  Happy to re-address this in December with you, BB.  Just like last year when Oregon was doing so poorly in recruiting everyone (ie mainly Trojans + TEE) were wondering what the frack was going on with Oregon’s recruiting?  Per 247, Oregon ended up #2 in the nation in 2026 recruiting, right behind your fav team. 🙂

2. We aren’t competing head to head with other teams as much as with USC.  There is some overlap with a few (kudos to UCLA on their recent resurgence in recruiting!), and now specifically with Cal since their new head coach had currently coached at Oregon and has contact with some of our targets, of course, and where he can offer immediate playing time.  We’ll steal a few from our Husky friends now and then.  Or they will overpay for guys like Kodi Greene to make a “splash”.  Oregon’s brand and recruiting reach has grown since the old Bellotti/Chip days, thanks initially to Mario and now to Lanning.  Sure, would be great to land more CA kids, but not at the price of overpaying for them.

3. I think the word in California should be, if you’re not good enough, you won’t play at Oregon, thus the reason for unceremoniously shedding so many previous 4-star CA recruits.  You could easily say their panties are in a collective bunch.  Oregon still has yet to lose a starting player to the portal.  And Oregon has been and is among the tops in the nation in the # of recruits who are drafted into the NFL.

I think the real story here is that Oregon is recruiting such solid players (look at the 3 of our true frosh who started last year for a team that made the semi-finals), it isn’t developing those players who aren’t good enough to develop.  And those players are upset and complaining about it….lol!

There are worse problems to have in college football, ya know, BB?  Like for instance….um…..ok, no, not going there, friend… 🙂

USC definitely has their stuff together these days and should challenge going forward – I’ve always said the real sleeping giant from the good ol’ Pac-8/10 is somewhere much closer to Figueroa than Montlake.

Oregon is simply taking the place of where Washington stood back in the good ol’ days.

As we see from our own conference history, there’s room for several challengers on the west coast.

Dena, do you remember when Pete Carroll was first hired? His relentless energy, optimism and enthusiasm started attracting
high end recruits. Chesney has those same personality traits. Both are/were also relentless recruiters along with
their respective coaching and support staffs.

Lol. You really believe that’s all it is?  A poor kid ain’t gonna take $500k at 17 because they like the coach’s smile and a perennially losing FB team?  I mean it’s a take….

So what is the proper way to recruit in today’s NIL landscape?  Tell us, oh knowledgeable one.  What is USC doing that is so pure and righteous? What are the Bruins doing with their current recruiting that is so below your standards of college football excellence?  Please, by all means…you have the floor.

Cutting checks or at least making financial promises aka IOUs

call me crazy 😝 but I understand promising a $250k check (annually) always helps

The only difference between the two is the money is no longer delivered in a paper bag at midnight in MacArthur park.

Pete came to USC as a third or fourth choice and USC fans were not thrilled at all when it happened.  He obviously won you guys over quickly, but to say he came down to you on some beam of light from the football heavens is a bit “revised”.

Yep true. Carroll was an NFL reject when we hired him.

the INITIAL comp is better then BB is admitting. What Pete achieved at USC was legendary.  Thats a mountain BC is trying to climb
