We lost to a better overall team w/ terrific running backs. Yet in spite of ourselves, we still had a chance to win. In spite of everything. That is definitely imo on Riley and some of those questionable calls. Like the short yardage ones you pointed out. I don’t think we adjusted well to what the Irish did on D.

As for our defense, stacking the line on D left us vulnerable that if the LOS was beat there wasn’t much of a defense left in the second wave. I’m disappointed overall with the coaching on this game, but we also have to give hats off to the Irish. Question now is – how does the team react? Losing to the cornholes would tell us a lot about Riley and his ability to keep the team together.

When you play a better team on the road and you lose both lines of scrimmage. And you failed twice on fourth down and turned the ball over three times.

then, there had to have also been something pretty positive going the other way for you to even have a chance in this game.

people like to throw the baby out with the bathwater. But this game gave USC a really good look at where they are. Their progress. And how far they still have to go. I don’t think anybody thought that USC was a top five team. And if you were going to go on the road in bad weather to that place and win against the present team that they have. You need to have a top five squad

 

all of the hand ringing and teeth gnashing and complaining is a little lame because most of us knew this going in. What colors it is the rivalry  aspect and the hatred for Notre Dame

newsflash.  USC is not a top 5 team and no one is pretending they were.

SC decided  on Defense to shut down the ND passing game. That was not ND’s strength. So ND gashed SC on the ground, where was the adjustment?  Bring another guy into the box. All night long #18 was flying up field taking himself out of the play, as were other players. Get ready for a healthy dose of ground n pound the rest of the season.  BTW, I’m sure the safety’s had a good look all night watching the running backs charging 10 yds by them.

I agree with 909 and Java takes on da game.  Here’s my short take.  USC’s O played good enough to win the game.   O = 328 yds pass and 68 yds rush = 396 t yds.  OK, the O had a tuff time running the ball.  O = B+.  The O missed scoring more pts on these mistakes:  J. Lane drop rec on the 1/2 yd RZ line (dats 7 pts), QB Maiava IT at the 30 yd line (dats 3 to 7 pts), Lemon fumble on the 30 yd line (3 to 7 pts).  Dat’s 17 pts = 37 pts, which would have won da game.

The key problem was the D which was awful.   D = C-.  ND rushed for 308 yds and passed for 136 yds = 444 T yds.  The D played slow, missed gaps, bad tackling and got pushed around.  DC DA Lynn D has been below average this year.  Bad job fixing his D.

AM I missing something? Only rushing for 68 yds is horrible F. Especially giving up 3 T/O’s! F

Holding your opponent to only 306 yds rushing is an amazing achievement! F
