ParticipantAs we have learned money talks. Sounds like he has a deal in place by the no contact tag. I saw him play only a few times but was impressed with his talents

ParticipantLSU offered $2mill more than UW. If true, who would refuse that?

ParticipantYup, just got a call from a casual fan a while ago. Checked it out. LSU? Miami? Tampering for sure.
Well, I did say Willaims was fun to watch. Fun to watch vs inferior opponents but very average against better teams. But never said he was a championship caliber QB either.
Was I looking forward to seeing him play this season? Sure. But like I have also said, it is not a big deal to me anymore and will simply see who is on the roster this fall.

ParticipantDang, dat was a close call for UDub. Smart UDub upped the ante and met his asking price. The kid is a very good DT QB, yep like Sawtooth said he is only average in passing accuracy, but man he’s an A+ runner. He drives D crazy. Although on da short size (5-11) UDub will go far with Demond Williams as QB1 in 2026 FB season… Cheers

KeymasterNo dude. He left AFTER he signed his NIl deal with Washington. Like they upped the ante. He said yeah I’m in and last said said nah I’m out
and UW says they gonna sue and not let him go. Good for them. This madness has to stop.

LA DuckParticipantAnd how would that work exactly? Let’s say UW wins the lawsuit (and to me it sounds like they would), Williams stays with the program due only to contractual obligations. Gonna be great for team morale and for the team to collectively “support” the most important cog in the college football team dynamics, a guy who didn’t want to be there, abandoned the team after signing a deal to remain there, and let them know when most were busy burying a Washington athletics teammate? Okay…..yep, sad situation overall.
You’ll understand this one, Java: It’s a bit like Matt Kalil suing his wife to stay with him. Sure, he could win – but then what? A happy life to thereby ensue? Yep, a lifetime without actual copulation is probably no life at all for her. I’m sure she’d find various suitors to get her what she needs while “happily” married solely by legal agreement foisted upon her…. 😉

KeymasterYou can’t compel performance.
you can sue for breach of contract
for compensatory damages
easily make the argument of deception. And damage to program for not having a suitable replacement at this late hour. And the damage that now represents.
now that this is all mercenary and monetary they can attribute damages to players leaving. Two way street now.
not only could they recover some damages. They could help tilt the playing field Warming shot across the bow to players. Who right now keep pushing the envelope

ParticipantThere may be an equitable remedy available to UW, namely specific performance of a personal service contract. Damages do not make UW whole in a case where there is the loss of an irreplaceable player.

LA DuckParticipantOh completely agree, Java. UW could absolutely sue (or at least threaten to sue in the hope that he’d back down from going to the portal) for breach of contract. But there’s no effective way he’d ever suit up for Washington again regardless of how it ends up.
What I’ve heard is UW is trying to force him to stay at UW contractually, not simply to get what the UW might be otherwise agreed to be owed in compensatory damages. My point is using that as leverage to force him to remain at Montlake as QB1 would not end well for the Husky football program imo.

ParticipantUW (with the B1G) is not filing a lawsuit to compel Williams to play for UW next season but for damages. 1) The buyout in the contact reads the cost of the buyout is in the “sole discretion” of Washington and 2) The contract specifically states that “the institution is not obligated to enter the Student-Athlete into the transfer portal or otherwise assist or facilitate the Student-Athlete’s transfer to another college or university.”
Even the agency that handled William’s contract with UW was blindsided and initial reports from the current UW players is ‘In shock’ and disbelief. Word going around is that every program and conference in the country is following it closely and is that this might be the tipping point of the crap that has been going down. It matters not if UW is hosed in this situation, it will be worth it.
As I mentioned, Williams is not, nor will be, a part of UW’s football program moving forward.

LA DuckParticipantGood to know that there is no belief within the program he could ever effectively return to UW, mandb. Thanks for the ESPN link. As it notes, sounds like this may end up being a flashpoint for all of college football and the transfer portal/NIL.
Can’t believe he would make any such portal jump unilaterally without consulting with his agent/advisors. Or maybe he did, they advised of the potential ramifications, and he jumped anyway?
