KeymasterI would say maybe 1-2 of them are “really? That’s a bummer”.
2-3 are eh. Whatever. Ok. Easily replaceable.
and 5-6 look like they were asked for their scholarships back. The cruel reality of modern roster management
dj jordan makai saina carlon jones. Summary. Two years at usc. Couldn’t get on the field. Goodbye
Bryan Jackson Braylon Conley. Anthony beavers. Just guys who will see more talented kids coming and might see the field again in a couple years. In beavers case it’s a Mayer or “are you still here?” All passed up by better talent. Too bad.
Steve miller and Gus Cordova. I told you all for 2026 they’re signing a bunch of 3 stars and 1/3 will develop. Become contributors or stars. The other 2/3? Well miller and Gus round out they’re 3 stars for a reason and will never play so they’re getting out now. 3 stars are the new walk ons
Matai tagoai. This surprises but poly kids aren’t always the smartest and get very sensitive. Probably didn’t play as much as he wanted and didn’t have much patience. Too bad for him. Has 3 years left. Surprised to see a 4 star bomb out early but it happens.
so people are all wondering wow how can usc receuit this many. Where will they put them all. There ya go. The coaches know. In fact they probably have room for about 10 portal kids now. Though I only see them taking 5

ParticipantI saw a USC clip, the reporter said All of these guys entering the TP were by designed, cutting decisions by GM Bowden and C.LR. Roster management. Not sure if it’s true or not?
We knew in the past, even before NIL that most players, maybe 80% in the TP were/are rejects, being cut. And, something like 46% in a TP will never be picked up by another FBS D-1 school, meaning that their FB career is pretty much over. For these players there are options: FCS D-1 schools, D-2, D-3 and JC routes. Now days, with GM’s on board, the cutting Biz is even more brutal.
Heck, it’s dat way with all sports in college. HC will only guaranty one year ride, after dat their rides are no longer guaranteed and can get cut, scholarships taken away upon evaluation… Cheers

KeymasterWhen all this free agency started everyone was excited to go buy more players. And for the freedom of movement. I remember saying be careful what you wish for. This is the rich getting richer like a Jordan Addison or Carson beck. But the majority’s you said. Getting poorer
matai being cut? After one year? The only explanation I have is that maybe he was lazy. Bad habits. And as a true frosh they might have said nah. If you’re gonna cut class and not show up to the weight room as a frosh. You’re done. His hs resume was excellent. The 3 stars? Yeah. Most won’t work out and if you got guys who are 3 stars and dead last on the depth chart then you’re bringing in better talent.
the first wave. Jackson. Conley. Kinda shocked me. But after looking at who was hurt and recruits. Ok. Man who they gonna have for the bowl? Riley seems to be ok w guys sitting out bowls for transfer or the nfl.
oh well. I wouldn’t do it this way but I’m not the head coach.
I do know they chart and grade everything. They take attendance at every weight session. Every practice. And all those “analysts” they have for everything? They grade everything Drills. Scrimmages. And then they rank guys. They probably measure progress too. Who is moving up. Who is moving down.
ok so if they’re all asked to go. Then that means we probably have a wave of guys who will choose to go as Jan 2 approaches. Guys who get poached from other teams. Who hear agents whispering to them behind the scenes.
some wind up ok. Like I have to assume Duce and branch left on their own. They ended up at fsu and Georgia. Miller moss at Louisville? Probably mutual. He just was good so he got a good ride. The Oregon guys pregnon and Bear? Poached. Tackett Curtis? I dunno. Probably left. Again. All the above got good rides at good programs.
but guys like Korey foreman? 2 years as a sub at Fresno? That wasn’t by choice. And sadly there were dozens more each year whose names we already forgot about because we don’t even know where they ended up or if they ended up anywhere.

ParticipantButkus, I’m a fan of Taigoa, but my guess he was dropped because he was unable to put on weight. Conley is the only one we’ll really miss IMO.

ParticipantBruddah GTrojan, yeah I liked M. Tagoai too. Like Bruddah Java wrote/said there are many things that are recorded into player’s evaluation file. I would think GM Bowden and C.LR would have given Tagoai at least 2 years to put on more weight and strength. I think he got cut for other reasons; grades, class attendance, practices, etc.?
Dis hurt cause, the team needs good LB’s… Cheers

KeymasterYou understand their new teams had widely divergent years?
Duce and his new team might get their coach fired? you think that was a success? Going winless in conference on the road?
Georgia has a wildly talented team and is a great location if you can land there. Good for Branch. He dropped passes at USC and his deadbeat brother gravy trained along for the ride. Branch wasn’t even used by Georgia until their main guy got hurt.
So would Branch have been useful at USC? If Lemon got hurt, I suppose.
I go based on what I see. Clearly Lemon had a great year. Clearly USC had a strong offense despite RB injuries. Clearly Riley knows how to move the ball and clearly Branch didn’t fit. Not everyone does

DaystalkerParticipantJava, tell us the fairy tale again about the 9-3, 4th place in B1G program that is asking recruits to leave and yanking scholarships and acting like Saban-Era Alabama meets The Wolf of Wall Street but with a championship ending. I love the way you tell it.

TEEParticipantApparently scholarships are one year now. So say a player is a junior and asked to leave or his scholarship won’t be renewed. Can the player just stay with the school to get his degree and remain a student ? Would he then have to pay his own COA ?

KeymasterWell it’s a free country and if he’s academically in good standing w the school they can’t expel him so I suppose he could pay his tuition and finish.
whats funny is that right before all this one year stuff usc thought they were going to be all ahead kf the game and enlightened. And guarantee the scholarship for 5 years. That was under helton and maybe bohn?
and like almost instantly the world of cfb snickered and said “yeah. Thanks but no thanks. We will take free agency. Give us the $$$” and now USC is whoring these kids one year at a time like everyone else.

ParticipantSo did more kids benefit from the portal than the old system where kids got a 5 year promise at an education? Don’t think so. sc
