ParticipantI know it’s a funny joke and meme but the story behind the story is 1) the Angels had no starting pitching besides Shohei and more importantly 2) they were in the Astros division
like being in the sec and Alabama/georgia division.
3) Ohtani joined angels in 2018 and They rarely played together as Trout is always hurt.
truth vs narrative

KeymasterYou could make the same argument for anyone playing in the Dodgers division, and yet the Padres, the Giants and the diamondbacks have all been in the playoffs the last six or seven years

ParticipantThat’s actually a damn good point. 😂🤦♂️ very valid.
Giants have made playoffs once since 2016 or 2017. And Colorado might be worst in league. Getting 10-12 wins a season against the Rockies is a nice bump. Arizona has just recently been good again themselves.I was trying to point out the tough division foes as a driver. Like Tom Brady beating up on jets and Buffalo for many years but your point stands. I it is also thinking about the high number of inter division games which I feel historically used to be in the 20s but that has also changed a lot and is pretty low now. 13-16 I think?
But the theory is obv the weaker your division/opponents the easier the road.

KeymasterAnd the NL west almost every year has two playoff teams. And has had as many as 3. The d backs went to the series one year and have been in the playoffs a couple times. Not sure about Colorado. They haven’t always been bad. San Diego is in the playoffs almost every year the past 5-6 years. As to the giants. Not sure about once since 2016-17. They won 109 games or something one year. For sure we’re in it then.
al west has some horrible teams. Or has had them. Seattle and Oakland come to mind

ParticipantI mean…Seattle just went to game 7 for AL pennant?
yes padres, who you say suck ass almost every day, has consistently made playoffs. Make that make sense. No NL West isn’t always sending 3 teams.
angels very good interleague record against Dodgers matter here imo and Yes I would say AL west is a better division than NL west. Of course impossible to prove but fun to debate .

KeymasterSince the topic is trout. Which I guess is since 2016?
let’s see.
mariners have been to the playoffs twice. This year and 22 never advanced to the series
Astros had quite a run but were MLbs biggest cheaters. Not sure how to deal with that. I think they been to the World Series 5’times won it twice. And I bet they’ve been to the playoffs a couple other times. No one gets to the series like Houston. Then again no one cheated like them either. They made the playoffs 8 years during that span. Almost as many as LA. In the series as much as La and won one less If you prosecute them for cheating then all of that falls apart. Fair to say La is 4-1 and they are 1-4
Rangers have made the playoffs twice Won it all once Largely on the back of a dodger
angels 0
Athletics Surprisingly made playoffs 3 times and never advanced to the series
So you have the Astros dominating and the athletic got a cup of coffee 3 times. The rangers twice. The mariners twice. And the only team doing anything was the rangers who won it all Lemme go look at the NL

KeymasterDodgers. 10 playoff appearances. 3-4 championships. 5 World Series appearances This tops Houston
Giants. 2 appearances and record setting year in 2021 for wins. No WS appearances but immediately preceding this look back period they have 3 championships. If we did the same for the Al west they’d all have none.
Colorado 2 playoff appearances.
D backs. 2. 1 WS appearance.
Madres. 4 appearances. No ws of course
let’s see. 20 playoff appearances. 6 WS appearances. 3-4 championships. Lemme look back at Al west
15 appearances 6 WS appearances 2-3 championshipspretty close I’d give the nod to the NL West due to the cheating Meaning they performed as well or better without the stain of being liars and crooks like the best team in the AL the last decade

KeymasterWhoops. Made a mistake. Houston got to the WS 4 times not 5.
so subtract one of everything from them and the AL.
I was right that they made the playoffs 8 times. So it still stands at 15 total

ParticipantTrout came up for good in 2012. They had two good years with him.
2014, best record in majors, swept by KC in Wild Card round
2015, took the Astros to the last day of the season, then lost.
Ohtani joined the team in 2018. The Angels went all-in that year with what looked like good free agent signings and it all blew up by the trade deadline.
They went 80-82 in 2018. That’s the last time they even won 80. 78 wins will never get you to the playoffs, no matter who’s in your division.

ParticipantThe Angels didn’t fail to make he playoffs because they were in the Astros’ division. They failed to make the playoffs with Trout and Ohtani because they stunk.
The Angels were never even competitive with the Astros once Ohtani arrived. In those six years the Angels finished AN AVERAGE of 23 games behind the division winner.

ParticipantEver hear of inter division games? Like the Rockies vs the Dodgers? Of course getting beat up by a division team impacts an overall team record.
but I’m not here to defend the angels. They haven’t been very good.
but issue wasn’t Trout and Ohtani even tho they didn’t play together very much with injuries. The ISSUE was starting pitching. They haven’t had an ace since 2012 or 13 with Jared Weaver. High draft picks like Heany, Garret Richards and Tyler Skaggs didn’t work out.
Ohtani won 9 games one year and 15 another.
He was their ace. One just isn’t enough. Look at Dodgers this WS run. Pitching galore. Smart.but to crap on Trout and Shohei is just dumb.
its like crapping on a guy with 5 TDs who loses 38-35. Just Stephen a myth lazy.
