KeymasterHow is this even possible? How did they negotiate a $49
milliom buyout to $9? Any of you going to take $9 mill when you’re owed $49? Not me. Know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna sleep in. Eat captain crunch every morning. Pay someone else to clean my fish tank. Fart loudly in whatever room I want. Tell the wife and her kids there’s the door if you don’t like it. Fly private to no place in particular because I can. Sit on the beach and watch the sunset. Buy my wife a puppy farm both so she will be happy and occupied Watch Brady bunch reruns every morning. Watch a whole menu of the greatest college football games ever played at night. All that include UsC wins. Oh and first run movies brought to my house by some hot chick in a bikini.
know what I’m not doing? Taking $9. When I don’t have to. This is perplexing. Why in the world would James Franklin do this? Jimbo Fischer didn’t. He sat on his butt and collected what. $70 mil? Still doing it. Ed Orgeron somehow also got negotiated down and I’m not sure why. I think they owed him $30 million and he got $17.
maybe these contracts aren’t as guaranteed as we think. But Franklin seems as stupid as he was at the end of big games. How to lose $40 million just like you’re playing a top 20 team

ParticipantPenn State was going to have to pay the difference between what Va Tech paid Franklin and the buyout amount. Va Tech, Penn State, and Franklin appears to have gotten together on a deal where Franklin receives a long term deal from Va Tech from which he will be more than compensated for the buyout sum, Penn State gets a large reduction in their buyout liability, and Va Tech gets the head coach they want at pretty much the going rate for a top flight coach with a proven track record.

KeymasterWhy would VT ever do that? I’d be like here. We will give you a dollar fifty to coach next year and you can collect the rest from them.
why would he even want to coach? He’s working for free

ParticipantNot the move I’d have made but I can see his point.
I assume Franklin’s sense of identity and self-worth is tied up in coaching. While I’d have been happy to retire at his age with $49 mil in the bank, I doubt he sees retirement as an option. He and his agent also realize that whatever VTech pays him would get deducted from the $49 so he’s working for free in the sense that he’ll get no more for working than he would for eating bon-bons and watching The View.
Instead, he gets a $9 mil advance (obviously not offsettable) and a new gig with a salary that would be enough for me to retire on if I held the job for 2 years. I’d be surprised if it’s less than $7 mil/year. So not exactly working for free. And he gets to do what he wants to do, not what Java wants to do.
