Java
KeymasterLet’s look at this financially. A 3rd round pick, middle of the 3rd round. Is a generous place for jakobi to be. A mid 3rd round pick will get a $1 million signing bonus and $1.1 mil a year for 4 years. Assuming he doesn’t get cut. $5.5 million total value over 4 years.
So you say “well of course! Look at that money! ” Not so fast. First, a guy of his stature probably can haul down a million next year. Name recognition and pay to play about half and half. Million I’d say. He will get a lot of PR and hype from USC, “building his brand” In the NFL he will be just another forgotten 3rd rounder.
Here’s where it gets good. Let’s just say he has a good Senior year and established himself as an alpha. Gains 10-15, bodies guys up. Becomes the #1 option. And forget top 10. Let’s just say he plays himself up to the LAST pick of the first round. I think we all agree this is very reasonable. Yes Jeremiah Smith will get the Pub and be a top 5 pick. No matter. Lane will be a real value and get picked at 32.
What’s that pay?
The LAST pick of the first round will get a signing bonus of $4 million and have an annual salary of $2.4 million. Total value of deal? $13.6 million. Being a first rounder means you get better reps in practice, almost a guaranteed starting position. And local endorsements, maybe even national. Great platform to build your NFL brand. 3rd round guys park in public parking lots and walk to the field unrecognized.
But oh, oh oh, Java. He be such a po folks playa. He needs money now. Baloney. But his body won’t hold up while he plays for free and he could be paid now!
OK fine. Hard to predict what a guy will make after his 4 year deal is done since the average career is less than that. Lets just say he survives and makes what he makes on the deal. That would mean 5 years of earnings. So at the end of 2030 he would have made $6.5 million
Remember he is being PAID in 2026 for USC. $1 million.
And remember that 4 year deal. $13.6 million. Add to his USC earnings. $14.6 million
$14.6 is much more than $6.5
And he has a way bigger chance to build his brand at USC with a year of being a star. His body will develop more next year rather than be beat up.
Really a bad decision to bail unless someone has told him he’s going to be a 2nd or first rounder. There is no way he is a first rounder. None.
And a 2nd rounder’s 4 year deal is about $7 million so I would even say it’s worth playing another year of college to trump that.
Whoever is telling him he should leave is giving him bad advice.
