ParticipantThey face a $500k conference penalty. Wonder if this becomes a trend but then espn needs programming.

ParticipantThis is interesting. Initially the schools announced that the reason for skipping the bowl games is due to coaching changes at both schools. But now it’s coming out the players voted and decided not to play a bowl game.
article blurb:
Iowa State players met Sunday with administrators and elected not to play.
“The administrative staff and coaches respect and support the players’ decision,” Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement. “Our student-athletes have had an incredible season and we are grateful for their leadership as we worked through this process with them today.”
Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said he made the decision after speaking with the team’s leadership council and Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark.

KeymasterDo kids not get extra pay for a bowl? I am guessing if they are changing coaches a lot of those kids want to plan their next move.
I have wondered at one point beyond the playoffs this would happen and teams like USC and others would mail it in or have a lot of guys opt out For TCU it’s a nice home game. USC? Might be a problem there.
Vegas last year at least was a fun road trip.

KeymasterI had thought the Alamo Bowl had the first two choices and wanted USC versus BYU.
So failing that, I am not sure why they didn’t pick. Utah, Houston, Arizona, ASU. Was it about selling tickets? Why not Texas then?

ParticipantNow that the kids are getting paid, I guess they think they can go on strike. The schools have to now pay these kids, and the schools lose out on a lot of money by not playing a bowl game. Seems unfair to the school. If kids “opt out”, the schools should fine them.

ParticipantI don’t get it. Why not want a chance to play and compete?
The only reason I grinded and sweated out for practice every day (in high school) was to actually play, in a game, against another team with the actual enemy across from me.
Practices sucked. Games were fun.
Besides, do the new coaches coming in at KSU and ISU think they are inheriting a bunch of whiners that don’t want to compete?
