Fraud
ParticipantOregon. It’s fawking Oregon. My guess is lots of jump balls thrown, illegal man downfield penalties, missed lanes and tackles by the LBs and a BIT FAT LOSS!

ParticipantYea, but the difference now is Oregon has a lot of great players compared to years ago when they were kind of a doormat.
Occasional greats like a Bobby Moore and a Dan Fouts would come through the program but never enough players go get to that next level. That has changed.-

ParticipantYeah Bruddah RWC, Booby Moore (Ahmad Rashad) was a very good FB player, WR/RB, AA, All Pro-WR. He played with QB Dan Fouts on a very good FB team, but USC, UCLA, Stanford were PAC powers. I liked Rashad when he did sports TV, he was very good at his trade. Even Fouts was a good TV sports guy, along with Kieth Jackson, ABC.
Other FB players from Oregon: Norm Van Brocklin, QB, Russ Francis, TE, Mel Renfo, DB, C. John McKay, RB, C. John Robinson, TE.
I remember Russ Francis well, we were still living in Hawaii. Russ was from Hawaii, Kailua HS 1968-70. He was big, all muscles, cut too 6-5, 240 lbs. Played QB and DE, basketball, track and field. Soph and Jr years All State DE, Track & Field not dat good at QB or Basketball. But, summer and before his Sr. year, the family moved to Oregon. He was the nations HS top discus and javalin thrower. And, was the NCAA champ at discus and javalin. He was an AA at TE. He became All Pro NFL as a TE, San Francisco. His dad, Ed Francis was Hawaii’s Pro Wrestling Promoter (Big time money). He sold the da Biz and moved his family to Oregon. Rumor, he got pushed out by the Hawaiian Mob?
Back then Oregon was known for their Track & Field programs. They have continued till today as a T & F power. Many great runners, mostly long and middle distance runners.
Yeah, with Uncle Phil’s money Oregon will be a FB power. His wealthy foundation will bring in top players every year. But, I’m betting Uncle Phil must be getting ansy, he does not have much time left and still Oregon has not won a NC football team… Cheers

LA DuckParticipantNice job on the Oregon football history lesson, Butkus51!
You are officially elevated to “Oregon Football Acolyte”.
Enjoy your new well-earned status.
BTW sadly Russ Francis died a few years ago and oddly enough in a plane crash. My bag is fast cars, and as much as I love speed you won’t ever see any interest from me in flying a plane….
Do we have any pilots on this board?? Java maybe? Seems like a guy with the inherent confidence (and maybe some bravado) to do something like that…

KeymasterYeah I actually took flying lessons. Funny you mention. About 2010 or 2011.
my instructor was happy as a pig in slop to collect his $105 per lesson.
after maybe 6-7 of them I flew solo. Might have been more like 10-15. I don’t remember. I had 30 hours
anyway here’s what was funny. After I took off. And didn’t die. And landed. And didn’t die. And flew around up there a bit? I was like I think I’m done. I’m happy.
right about then the instructor opens up the manual. The stuff you have to learn to pass your various tests. It looked like a physics book. Geometry. Air pressure. Lift. Wind speed. Knots. Who the hell measure stuff in knots? Oh and true north vs magnetic north. Bullocks to all that
I told my instructor I was done. I took off. I landed. I didn’t die. On to the next adventure. Rappelling I believe it was. Man was he pissed. lol
and while this was not the “reason” I quit my ex and her lawyer were in court telling the judge I had a death wish and was trying to get myself killed to screw her out of her just due. I said now that’s an excellent idea and I would laugh from the grave but I love myself too much to say goodbye now.
so shutting them up about buying her a life insurance policy or setting aside $$ in case I fell out of the sky was a happy by product of me quitting.
right around that time I did do some rappelling. Snowboarding and wakeboarding. Can’t say I was great at any of them but I did all of them at least half a dozen times.

LA DuckParticipantGood story, Java. I thought you’d have that sort of an inclination. Hats off to pilots, I know a few including one who is still instructing others into his 70s, and I just don’t know how they do it.
BTW when don’t you have a good story?….lol. Maybe you should write a “coffee book” of your life sometime? 🙂

ParticipantGood story Bruddah Java. U got guts learning how to fly a plane.
1981, there was a tennis tournament in Phoenix. It was held in May. A tennis friend & player was an experience pilot, who logged in 2300 hours. He invited me and another player to fly with him to Phoenix. The other friend said OK, but I said no. I will go and fly with SouthWest Air. After 2 weeks of harassment, I caved in.
His plane was a Piper, single engine, 4 seats with decent luggage space. We left Van Nuys AP, around 7:00 am. Thank God it was a nice, clear spring day. Heck, during the take off, man dat Piper had very good power. He flew about 10,000 ft at 130 knots or 150 mph. The trip took under 3 hours. Heck as we were descending, it got bumpy. He said it was due to Thermal heat bouncing off the ground back into the air. Said it was normal flying the Southwestern states
The flight back home was pretty good too. I was impressed with his flying and pilot abilities. Shoot, the air traffic nearing Los Angeles got busy and he was in deep concentration listening and talking to the air controllers.
I think flying private planes is OK, but you had better fly with only an A+, experience pilot. My pilot friend said, he goes up and fly most weekends to other states to put in the hours and even during bad conditions. He said flying is all about flying in all kinds of weather and putting in da flying hours. Dat’s how one become a good pilot. He said if one gets nervous with bumpy rides, flying over the high Sierra’s mountain range gets really rough and challenging,
Oh, yeah he got to fly in other countries as well (using their planes). He said flying in Europe and the Alps mountains is the worst. Said, it is really rough flying the Alps mountains.
A Big Shaka to all the pilots… Cheers

ParticipantAw Bruddah LA Duck, did not know Russ passed away? Shoot, I saw him up close at Kailua HS FB games, track meets, basketball games, dang he was an imposing young Bruddah (6-5, 240 lbs and all, cut up muscles). We did not have steroids back then. His Dad was a big guy too, 6-5, 280 lbs. Must note most HS players back then weighed 140 lbs to 190 lbs. There were a few OL and DL at 225 to 250 lbs (Hawaiians and Samoans). He was a man among boys. At Kailua HS, Russ was an awesome DE, even when dbl teamed (All State).
I will never forget Russ Francis. Glad I got to see him play in FB and Track & Field… Cheers

LA DuckParticipantGood stuff, Butkus51.
Russ was quite the daredevil, once landing his P-51 Mustang fighter plane in the parking lot at a Niner’s practice field, skydiving into training camp, wrestling Mad Dog Vachon to the floor and securing the plane door in midair when piloting the intoxicated wrestler who had opened it in a drunken stupor at 10k feet.
Makes sense that he went out doing what he loved.

ParticipantThanxs for additional story about Russ and flying days. Shoot, forgot his first NFL team was the New England Patriots and then to San Francisco. Learned after his playing days, he went back to Hawaii and became a TV sports anchor for one of the stations. He loved Hawaii. I wonder how he ended up in up state, New York? Dang, it gets cold there during the winter… Cheers
He was a good guy. Went to see the State Championship baketball playoffs. Kailua vs Hilo HS basketball game. A small Filipino, Hilo guard (5’8″) drove the basket, then Russ gave the guard a hard block, sending the player crashing onto the floor. Russ rushed over to pick him up and kept saying I’m sorry; Russ looked shooked up. I said, what a good guy Russ Francis.
PS. His family spread his ashes in the waters off Kailua.

KeymasterIm sure Florida feels that way about Florida state college for women but it’s not 1965 anymore and times have changed.
you can enjoy the game drinking your bourbon on the rocks while smoking 4 packs of camels if you want. Sitting on your couch with the plastic cover
