I have read recently that in the 60s SC’s acceptance rate was 92%.  Now it’s about 10%, reflecting more applications.  When I attended it was still mostly a commuter school; I commuted from the West Side.  For me, getting in wasn’t the problem; funding was the problem.  I finally discovered, applied for, and received a State of California scholarship that paid all but $300 of my undergraduate tuition.  Imagine that — going to SC on the State’s dime.  I didn’t even apply to UCLA because I wouldn’t have been caught dead there, even though that’s where most of my friends went.  My backup school was L.A. State, solely because my dad worked in that area and I’d have a ride to school.

Sports has always been my passion, too.  I learned to read at age 3 or 4, using the sports section of the L.A. Times.

Too bad you didn’t get to more games in the student section.  In my seven years as a student I missed one home game.  It was the day I took the LSAT and for some stupid reason I chose to take it at SC.  It was Homecoming, with a crowd of over 80,000, and the test and the game ended at roughly the same time.  During the afternoon sections of the test, I powered through each section and then went to the bathroom to listen to the game.
