Reggie 1-B for Oakland, even though I hated that dude growing up he was a big reason for their WS championships in the 70's. Baltimore I would argue Palmer or even Brooks Robinson above Ripken. JMHO
Except Zach’s career predates our gang and Hal roach studios.
I’m going to guess someone on the writing staff was a baseball fan and gave the character that name.
I mean maybe it was a common perjorative at the time but assuming not since they were marketing the show for mass consumption. And the ball player had the name. I’m gonna guess they borrowed the players name for the character.
Zach’s career ended in 1927. Buckwheat the character appeared in 1934. Billie Thomas. Though the predecessor to little rascals and our gang. The silent films. Were around since the early 20s.
Stymie was kinda the original buckwheat. He was 1930-35
What surprises me is that some of the kids were on that cast for 10 years. Not sure how they pulled that off
Cal Ripkin was an average short stop. That's it. Most worthless record in all of sports history. Rose was better than Bench. Banks was a loser. Aaron gets the attention because he's black.
I don’t think as much of rose. I’d have to look back but I don’t think he walked much and he had little power. He switch hit. He was a product of artificial turf. Note the teams he played for. Cincy. Philly and Montreal. All had that awful hard parking lot turf.
He played a lot time. Stayed away from serious injury and made short contact to the ball. And was mentally competitive.
What’s funny is that the two men who many consider to hold the hits and hr records. Aaron and rose. Weren’t that highly regarded in their own times. When Aaron began sneaking up on the record a lot of people went “him? Really? You don’t say”. They all thought it would be mays. Or earlier. Mantle. Aaron hit a lot in his 30s when guys usually die out.
If I remember correctly Aaron only led the league in hr once? Thats pretty funny for the all time leader
I loved Pujols and was really excited when the Angels signed him. Then I suffered through 10 years of watching him disintegrate. More accurately, he seemed to disintegrate over the winter before he arrived in Anaheim and he was basically a replacement-level player by year 5.
In addition to the dropoff at the plate I detailed in response to Pasadena, below, he became by far the slowest runner in MLB. I always wished they'd set up a race around the bases between Albert and the second-slowest runner. I'd have bet the other guy crossed home plate before Albert reached third base.
As I said, if you just evaluate his time in St. Louis he was as good as any right-handed hitter ever.
If you just evaluate his time in Anaheim, nobody would ever give him a single Hall of Fame vote.
Yeah, the Angels got him at age 32 and had no right to expect he'd remain at HOF levels into his 40s. But they had the right to expect (and paid for) production at least similar to his St. Louis levels for the first five years, didn't they?
For the Cubs, replace Ernie Banks with Cap Anson, who had a much higher batting average, way more hits and a lot more rbi's than Banks.
Some youngster came up with that. As great as Clemente was, Honus Wagner was clearly the Pirates greatest ballplayer.

Walter Johnson is not a Washington National. They are the expos. Whose best player could be Andre Dawson. Randy Johnson. Pedro. Gary Carter.
Johnson’s senators became the Minnesota twins. So you’d have to move Kirby to the side. Or make an argument for Harmon Killebrew
For the Dodgers, a strong case could be made for Zach Wheat.

Other than that, Greatest Angel was Ryan. sc
Pretty solid.
Needs Nolan Ryan. Somewhere
Larry Walker was better then Todd Helton .
Sandy is about to be replaced by Shohei if he wins another ring or two.
But wasn’t Ivan Pudge Rodriguez a big steroid guy? But I guess they couldn’t go wit Coke head Guy, Hamilton.
so was Bagwell.
Stan maybe the man but Pujols was a monster too.
Who did Cy Young pitch for?
Two Trojans. I like that
most but not all. Barry Bonds isn’t on the list
