      OF COURSE IT DOES!!!!

And yes fwiw I was very pro CLR when we hired him.
SCs 162 nick and summary worried me but what can we do.
he was, on paper, a very good hire. Then I heard the sooner fan base was very happy Grinch was gone. Not as happy with CLR leaving fwiw as shown by their 2/3 year obsession With how he does at USC. The last few years seems to have filled their blood lust.

Transfer portal. NIL. B10 reach. The world was his for the taking. He fumbled it.

CLRs weakness. He’s a wimp. He panics. He is overrated as a play caller. Doesnt know crap about defense. Cant retain talent. (Fair. Who can???) Hes not a great recruiter. But His biggest weakness is talent evaluations. He recruits off idiots like Biggens and other services and not on size, explosiveness and football talent.
What strength of CLR outweighs all this?

Without Mendoza, this doesn’t happen for Indiana. Without Cignetti,  Mendoza Heismans year and NC doesn’t happen for Indiana.
why did CLR focus on Malachi Nelson over Mendoza? I mean is it really hard to see their difference in talent. I mean really?

It takes balls for an athletic director at a blue blood school to hire someone unknown without a proven head coaching track record or from a G5 school. They play it safe and hire the big name, shiniest object available.  That was CLR coming from Oklahoma with a proven track record of producing Heisman trophy winners but no defense as defense was optional in the Big 12 conference.

Indiana takes a chance on a lesser name and if it fails, it’s no big deal, it’s status quo for Indiana.

I don’t believe Riley at the time was the shiniest object available as you say. He wasn’t on the open market while at Oklahoma, in fact no one there including his players saw it coming and felt betrayed. Why do you think they were all so pissed off when he left, as Pasadena already touched on. SC offered him an insane 10 year $110 million contract with total compensation even exceeding that figure. Anyone would jump at that and he did.

Cignetti lost to Helton in 2022. GA Southern vs James Madison. Quite an anomaly.

If USC kept Clay they would, AT Worst, be in the same boat they are in today.
