Participant<p style=”text-align: left;”>Fun watch. šæ didnāt know about Baltimore Colts drama on draft day. damn that was crazy. Remember him being drafted by Steinbrenner.</p>
I knew he went to HS in SoCal but didnāt know he really wasnāt a SoCal kid. Football coach dad had them Moving around a lot. Dad and John had a great relationship. That was cool to see.Didnt know he was pigeon toed as bad as the Duke.
wont spoil it but college stuff was a lot of fun.
man what a talent he was. Not the prettiest arm motion or running style but man the ball got to where he wanted it to. Some high arching dimes and was real pretty in the air.
Lost 3 SBs early in his career. Badly. Man what a redemption arc. With help Of course from Terrell Davis š«” and Shannon Sharp. I do remember His helicopter play in the SB. Fun to rewatch.
One team whole career (16 years). HOFer. Legend. One of 5 best all time. What an ending he had. Ā š

ParticipantDon’t quote me on everything but it does go something like this. Yes, dad Jack was a Washington state native and a coach that moved around. Started his coaching career at Port Aneles HS (where John was born) and then was hired at Grays Harbor CC in Aberdeen, next to his home town of Hoquiam, then spent a few years as an assistant at WSU in Pullman. Then Cal St Northridge(?) before San Jose St then Stanford. John spent his youth in Port Angeles and Pullman.
To this day, John Elway is still the best college QB I have seen and would still be my 1st choice if I was to build a team.

ParticipantMy high school Wilmington Banning High played against John Elway. We had Freeman McNeil ucla, jets, our Qb was Joey montijo, Fresno state. Elway beat us on a last second td. I was still in junior high but the whole city followed the Banninf Pilots. We ruled City football in those days. Everyone at school was talking about Elway that following Monday. The guy had the magic from the get go.
our coach was the legendary Chris Ferragamo, Vinceās brother. Vince played at Banning too.

ParticipantGreat story Bruddah Balls.Ā Yeah, in the mid 70’s to 80’s City HS were just as good as the CIF HS’s.Ā The City had HS FB powers, Banning, Carson, San Fernando, Granada Hills, Kennedy, Gardena, Dorsey, Crenshaw, Narbonne, Venice, Palisades, Lynwood, Hamilton, El Camino.
Back then, the entire SS CIF had so many top FB players, it fed many D-1 college FB programs: USC, UCLA, Stanford, UDub, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, Notre Dame, Michigan, ASU, Zona.
I remember the QB duel between John Elway-Granada Hills vs Tom Ramsey-Kennedy HS, both schools were rivals and only 3 miles apart.Ā Shoot, Ramsey was a great QB, who went and starred at UCLA and Elway at Stanford.Ā USC went hard after both QB’s but had to settle for John Mazur, El Camino HS who was #3 QB in da City.Ā Heck, Mazur did just fine for us…Ā Cheers

ParticipantJohn Mazur is a name from the past. I think Marcus was his RB so that helped him, but he was not SC caliber. Correct me if Iām wrong because that was long ago but he threw as many picks as he did Tdās. Sean Salisbury who had prototype Qb measurables, ie, tall, big arm , etc, forced his transfer to Ā I think Texas Agricultural and Mechanical. I donāt think he did that well there. Our QB at Banning was Jamelle Holieway who famously forced Troy Aikman to transfer from Ā Oklahoma. Barry Switzer and Jrob were regulars at our campus.
Good posts in this thread Butkus. Thanks.

ParticipantBruddah Balls, Mazur was a 4* rated.Ā He was a hot QB at El Camino Real HS, West Hills, SF Valley.Ā He became QB1 at USC 1981 as a Soph and did fine, but like you said he had a great supporting cast behind him (Marcus Allen, RB and very good OL).Ā Yep, Sean Salisbury, 5* and #2 HS QB in nation from Escondido, San Diego, came in 1982 and won the QB1 job midway into the season as a true freshman.Ā Mazur dropped down to QB2, after the season ended JM transferred to Texas AM.Ā He did not find good success at Tx AM.
Sean was a great basketball player as well, 27 pts avg per game, Sr year.Ā With Sean at the helm, USC passed a lot, more than previous QB’s.Ā Hell, even Salsibury as QB1 only did OK as well, with average records.Ā We all felt frustrated, his HS reputation did not translate at USC.Ā But, he did better in da NFL and TV color sportscaster…Ā Cheers
PS.Ā Shoot Jamelle Holieway was a sensational DT QB for Banning and then OU, becoming an AA.Ā Yep, he did force Aikman to transfer, on the advice of C. Switzer calling UCLA C. Donahue.Ā Dam, dat was da great transfer.Ā Wow, what luck for UCLA.

ParticipantOh, from my recollection (memory) Tom Ramsey almost picked USC, it was like a 50/50 deal, UCLA/USC.Ā Shoot, in hindsight wished Tom Ramsey had picked USC, I think we would have most likely have won a NC with him at QB…Ā Cheers

ParticipantYes, Bob Whitfield. Btw, on the same OL was USC and NFL star Mark Tucker and Center Courtney Hall, Rice and NFL . Three NFL oline guys on the team. Running behind them was USC FB Leroy Holt and Brett Young, Oregon. The QB? Jamelle Holieway four year starter at Oklahoma. Ā No wonder I hardly played. I almost got killed or paralyzed a few times and that was just in practice.

ParticipantYeah, I too consider John Elway as the best HS QB I ever saw, just a gifted, talented FB player.Ā In HS and College, all the FB people said, JE had the strongest arm back then and standing the test of time until now.Ā 60 to 70 yd ropes, no arch.Ā But, for the strongest FB arm one could argue dat these QB had the strongest arm:Ā Brett Farve, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw and now Josh Allen.Ā For me, it’s John Elway.
I saw him play 4 times in HS (oh he was a DT QB who could scramble and run for positive yards), one negative he threw too hard where his Wr’s dropped many passes (affected his accuracy stats).Ā His teammates in HS and Stanford said they constantly had broken fingers and reverted catching with their arms and body.Ā Thus what Fresno Mike wrote the Elway cross, his passes left cross marks on their chest from the tip of the ball seams.
He was a 3 sport player at Granada Hills, standout not only in FB but Baseball as pitcher & outfielder.Ā In HS he hit over .500 and was a high draft pick.Ā In basketball he average 14 pts a game as a forward.
PS.Ā USC went hard for him, but John Elway had little interest in USC.Ā I think his Dad had a big say for Stanford, his father became the HC for San Jose St in 1979 and they lived near Palo Alto.Ā So the family could see him play without getting on a plane.

ParticipantThat was the mark the ball would leave on those catching his hard, fast passes…from the indentation where the seams meet at the point of the ball when caught.Ā He threw with just a little bit of velocity lol.
