Played in a fairly dead ball era. Cf was not a strong offensive position at the time. And he had decent to good power. Especially then. Played a long time.
when I look at him I see about 7 years in 9 where I say “yeah some really good stuff there”. Not overwhelming. I think he hit 300 once. Back when many guys did. Maybe 295 once. The problem I see is that he looks like he played about 17-18 years. And outside of that period he was really bad or mediocre. So batting average at 220 these days means you’re Kyle schwarber but you hit 50 hr. Murph hits 220 and hits 20 hr. I mean Dave kingman did that w more power.
so it’s not so much the best years for me. It’s that he had equal time. Like 7-8-9 years where I cringe. We all age. Willie mays was awful at the end. But that was a couple years. Murphy looks bad at the beginning and bad at the end and both were far too long to ramp up and ramp down imo.
and btw I started my look thinking I was going to make a case for him. I do find it odd that a two time mvp doesn’t get in but maybe they were weaker mvp years. I dunno
