ParticipantFor a no name. JMU put up some numbers this year.
not all cupcakes either.
his resume isn’t DEI fueled Dorell or Foster. At all. This is a real HC with real experience.
i haven’t listened but HEARD he shows personality in his pressers. Unlike Chip & Riley.

KeymasterBut did he build JM or was that Cignetti? Or perhaps even the administration having a commitment to football that few at that level of Low D1 have?

ParticipantI did not know Cignetti came from JMU.
valid question from you. Either way that’s a GREAT dude to learn from. Another plus for him.

ParticipantHe didn’t learn from Cignetti. He took over after Cignetti left. I’m interested in knowing if he coached with or under any coaches we’ve ever heard of.
But he has a demonstrated track record as a head coach. On that basis alone, UCLA could do a lot worse.

KeymasterI don’t know. Was he on Cignetti’s staff?

KeymasterJust looked it up. no he was not. he came to JMU from Holy Cross in 2024 to be the Head Coach.
Holy Cross in 2023.
JMU 24-25
UCLA 26?
Sorry, that’s too big a jump. Let’s see if this cut and paste works
2000–2001
Norwich (GA)
2002
Delaware Valley (DC)
2003–2004
King’s (PA) (ST)
2005–2006
Johns Hopkins (ST/DB)
2007–2008
Johns Hopkins (DC/ST/DB)
2009
Johns Hopkins (AHC/DC/DB)
2010–2012
Salve Regina
2013–2017
Assumption
2018–2023
Holy Cross
2024–present
James MadisonYeah, I don’t like this at all. No big time experience. Not even as an assistant. No NFL. No recruiting in the NIL world. Maybe he’s great but I am not feeling this at all.
Salve Regina (never heard of it), Assumption (same), Johns Hopkins (cool if he’s the coach of the medical school) and JMU? I assume these are all east coast.
So. No west coast ties. No D1 experience. No NFL experience. As an assistant or head coach. And 2 years following Cignetti at JMU. I am thinking he is gravy training on Cignetti here.

ParticipantI know of Assumption. The son of a good friend was a three-star QB in Orange County around 2000. Signed with a group of five school, left there after a year, ended up at Assumption and left there after a semester. Without looking it up I’d say Salve Regina is in Massachusetts or a state that borders Massachusetts.
I don’t think he could call Pete Carroll or Nick Saban for fatherly advice on whether to make the jump to UCLA.

KeymasterYeah I am gonna weigh ion with a thumbs down on that one. Maybe he’s the next Pop Warner. Could be. Maybe he’s the next Larry Smith. And I am sorry. Coaching at Suave Shampoo or whatever that was. And ASSUMPTION? You know what happens when people ASSUME. Then James Madison. Sorry, there’s nothing there that tells me he’s ever been on this level at any level. And he took over a program Cignetti, a notable program builder WITH a long resume of big programs and employers, actually built.

ParticipantFair points.
Now do Cignetti’s resume. that seems to have worked out.
No guarantees in hiring or recruiting. Only working theories and opinions. Time will tell.

DaystalkerParticipantJava don’t be a vahjeen. Remember that little butterball chip Kelly came out of nowhere as well and tore it up before he got far and lazy. The game is the game, no matter what level you are at, dude might just know what he is doing. All great coaches have to start somewhere. Not saying this guy is the next Clay Helton (has Riley finally matched clays win %?), but he is sure a better bet than the last 6 coaches UCLA has puked out onto the field.

KeymasterWell he and Chip both have Johns Hopkins in common
Chip was offensive coordinator for Oregon for two years. Before he was handed the keys to the same team that he had been half running for two years. So Chip got a pretty good runway to land on
but funny you mention chip. he has proven the inability to actually build anything turn anything around
so that’s your analogy not mine. Don’t blame me if we find that this guy is not a program builder
