Wrong SC Gator, even if UCLA buys out their lease, they can still be sued for damages if the buyout agreement doesn’t explicitly release them from liability, or if they are found to have caused damage to the property during their tenancy before the buyout.

A buyout is a New contract, and the terms of the new contract would determine if it includes a release of all claims, including those prior to the agreement. If the agreement does not include a release of liability the Rose Bowl operating committee and the city of Pasadena could still pursue legal action to recover any costs they believe UCLA is responsible for. Probably won’t happen but you can’t rule it out.
