Looks as though they’re finalizing the deal to play home games at SoFi stadium according to the athletic dept. It was described as a near done deal according to one source.

The plan is for Ucla to buy out the lease it currently holds with the city of Pasadena. The lease runs through June 2044, and estimates are  $60 to 80 million to extract itself from the agreement. It’s a given the city of Pasadena and Rose Bowl operating committee will sue UCLA for damages which could come to $1 billion by some estimates. No wonder the school is going broke.

SoFi is about 12 miles from Westwood and the Rose Bowl is 32 which will make it a lot easier for students trying to commute and paying those ridiculous parking fees at the RB.

Dang, UCLA is playing with fire.  A potential law suit of $1 B?  Why would UCLA make the move with a potential monster $1 settlement?  Crazy world of sports…  Cheers

Both of those things can’t be true.

Either UCLA will buy out the lease as part of a settlement agreement that will dispense with the threat of any litigation, or the City will demand $500 million or more as the buyout price and sue when UCLA says no.  But there won’t be a buyout and then a lawsuit.

I’ve never been closer to Sofi than when I got my first Covid shots at the Forum, but I can’t imagine the on-site parking there will have student-friendly pricing.

I’m a lifelong Westsider.  I’d much prefer the Rose Bowl over Sofi.

I think you’re 100% right here on all of it. A settlement will  remove the right to a  lawsuit for the city.
Interestingly other parties/vendors could sue. Like donors who they named the field after?

hadn’t thought about that.  Think of all those sponsors that won’t have their signs and ads seen by 20,000 traveling cheeseheads or Rutgers fans?   And of course the 5,000 to 19,000 ucla ones.  EBT ane WIC are going to be so upset no one will see their ads and sign up

wonder if that’s the end of the rose bowl.  Can’t survive on medical swap meets forever.  Though they do outdraw ucla football

Wrong SC Gator, even if UCLA buys out their lease, they can still be sued for damages if the buyout agreement doesn’t explicitly release them from liability, or if they are found to have caused damage to the property during their tenancy before the buyout.

A buyout is a New contract, and the terms of the new contract would determine if it includes a release of all claims, including those prior to the agreement. If the agreement does not include a release of liability the Rose Bowl operating committee and the city of Pasadena could still pursue legal action to recover any costs they believe UCLA is responsible for. Probably won’t happen but you can’t rule it out.

Sure, they could write whatever new contract they want, if both sides agree.  But advising UCLA to spend that kind of money without getting a full release of all claims in return would be legal malpractice.  And if the City is serious about the lawsuit they’ve already filed it won’t make the buyout deal, will it?

Why would UCLA pay $80M and not be free from future claims? That makes little sense

Well pretty obvious that ucla is rolling in money and can afford 60-80 million. Minimum.  To get out of the rose bowl lease.  I mean the program is doing so well.  What else would they do with the money?  Give it to Kal?  Hahahahaha nah pay the city of Pasadena because ucla is living on f you money

they have so much they can build a trophy case inside sofi for a special section recognizing the greatness of Bruin football the last 50 years.  It would be filled with pictures of Troy aikman and all the men he didn’t date

It’s a lot easier to blow off $60-80 million when you know the money’s not coming out of YOUR bank account.

When you’re spending other people’s money, neither value nor quality is an important consideration.
