Maiava’s magic is displayed in the link.

Riley’s strong chess game: Making future opponents account for Maiava running. It’s on film now.
The 2pt conversion had Nebbie’s defense totally confused.

Interesting announcers pronounce it my Ava

Butkus can dispute this but I doubt he will. I’ve spent a lot of time in Hawaii Tahiti etc and my guess is the name is

      Ma ee ava

Maybe it’s not worth running around d and correcting everyone but anyone know the proper name pronunciation?

Bruddah Java, Maiava is a prominent Samoan name in Hawaii.  When I lived there, there were a Pro wrestler and good number athletes with the name.  Whenever sports announcers said the name, it was exactly pronounced like here.  Mai a va.

In the Hawaiian language, W is pronounced like the V.  Hawaii = Ha Va ie.   Cheers

PS.  The famous actor, the Rock, Dwayne Johnson mother maiden name was Maiawa.  The Rock grandfather was the famous Hawaiian wrestler.  Also, our all PAC 12, LB from Maui, Hawaii, Kaluka Maiava (2005-08) was related to the Rock.  Same family tree.

The way you wrote it makes me think I am pronouncing it right?  Ma i ava?    Announcer had it as My ava  I just don’t think from all the time I spent there that it’s the latter.  Like you said with Ha Va ie  (and some go further, Ha Va ie ie)  And Kauai  which is Ku wie ie ??

Oh well, bigger problems in the world to worry about, Just curious

BB, I believe CLR is a good coach, but IMO he has a notable flaw. When SC wins the coin flip he frequently goes on offense and doesn’t defer to the second half. IMO that is a statistically a stupid move and especially on road games, which puts our defense on the field one extra time in the second half and removes one series from our offense. My guess is this affection he has to take the ball on offense after winning the coin flip dates back to his time with Mike Leach.

He won the coin flip in Nebraska and went on offense with a QB who has displayed problems in away games. Your thoughts?

I think it was at Purdue that Riley won the toss and deferred to the second half. I thought,” yep our boy is growing “. But no, he insists on deferring. I can only assume he doesn’t trust the defense. I don’t like it either GT.
