KeymasterHome field matters turnovers matter. Penalties matter. Discipline matters.
the USC defense has had discipline problems for quite a while. Although today the discipline problems are a penalty that’s cost them a 75 yard touchdown and a turnover that cost them an Illinois touchdown
plenty of game left but this has all the feel of a bad outcome

KeymasterIllinois stops usc on 4d and can blow this game open with getting ball in second half. And usc had not stopped them yet
The USC lines. d and Ol both are being beaten by Illinois.
USC after their unimpressive performance at Purdue. And after their unimpressive performance at home against Michigan State. They showing that they are who we originally thought they were as in an 8 and four team. I was afraid of this. You have to look better against the Michigan State and Purdue than USC did to claim that you’re any good
This performance is an indicator that not only will they lose in Notre Dame. They will likely get beat by Michigan and annihilated by Oregon.

KeymasterMoments in games matter. Completing a pass on the sideline with 3rd and 14 toe in
double reverse touchdown pass in the red zone by Illinois
fumble by usc.
no pressure or sacks by usc.
75 yard trick play td called back because a fat center is wandering around not even engaged Non contact penalty.
USC has two plays to gain 6 yards and throws on both to lose the ball at midfield.
as these happen the line play shifts on both sides of the ball to Illinois.
This game is quickly adopted the Illini tempo. Like Playing michigan.
this is quickly looking like a 35-21 Illinois win .

KeymasterAgree. I thought they were going to reverse the fumble. I thought they were going to reverse the tight end pass on the sideline. I just had this bad feeling on the road that you don’t get the brakes. For USC to prevent a touchdown and get three points in 46 seconds. It would’ve been nice to tie it but that’s still a 10 point turnaround
so we were looking at being down 21 to 7. And it is a 14 to 10 game. If USC defense can figure out how to get a couple of stops on Illinois they can sneak out of here with a win five minutes ago this looked like a three touchdown loss
that’s why we love college football

KeymasterThis entire game feels like an uphill battle. They hold Illinois to three points on the opening possession. So instead of staring at 21 seven down and Illinois having the ball, USC can actually tie the game down 17 to 10 they marched down field. They look good and then maiava throws his first pick of the season.
this game is two steps forward, three steps back and suddenly the Trojans are in danger of being down double digits yet again

ParticipantPlayers have to perform and not have turnovers, BUT this loss is on Riley. Despite everything, it as you said and they could have won. They scored with too much time only to give up the FG to lose. They could have won if the play calling/ clock management at the end was better. Meet the new team, same as the old team.
Penalties are a coaching issue, lack of discipline. I was surprised that the two lines did as average or poorly as they did – minimum pressure on D which didn’t help the piss poor DB’s. Physical teams will destroy us on the lines, even if they aren’t that great.
It’s one game so I don’t want to go all Fraud and overreact. BUT, CLR might have peaked. If he can’t do it this year not sure he ever will. Not in this conference. Maybe he could make the playoffs from the BIG12 and just play shoot out every game there where defense doesn’t count. Old UNLV basketball on the football field. But in the BIG I’m not sure that he can adjust to the physical play that we need.
Sigh.
