      Can be insane when a swell hits like recently. Where can you find a place where Bodyboarders, Bodysurfers and Surfers on long and short boards all gather in one spot?
      You try and survive the drop without getting crushed by tons of whitewater not to mention avoiding getting your head smashed on the  shallow bottom. Wedge is a fitting name with the way the wave is shaped coming off the rocks.

      In my younger days it had to be the most dangerous place i ever bodysurfed with maybe Sandy Beach running a close second. Both places break close to shore. I loved growing up in Newport, just wish my Dad had kept some of that Real Estate.

      People talk about killer Dana here.  Before the harbor was built. Like it was Gods spot for surfing.  Sometimes I wish they’d shut up. Harbor has been here 55 years people.  Get over it.

      apparently Newport used to lose its sandy beaches.   Often. And they had to rebuild them.    Lots. And eventually solved the problem.  I didn’t know that.   And apparently they had houses slide into the ocean and everything   Cured that   Good for them   Something about jetties

       

      Gives hope to San  Clemente and capo beach.  Which are losing theirs a lot

      True, years ago they had to put in all those jetties from about 62nd street to 28th to save the beach. Newport pier to the Wedge was never a problem with really deep beaches, but got some crazy high tides occasionally.

      Dana was always a cool place I used to surf Doheny and Salt Creek. Always liked the harbor.

      Bruddah RWC, Nice shot of a big sucker (wave).  Yep, Sandy Beach has big waves.   Makapu’u Beach has just as big waves too, which breaks more outside vs Sandy and Wedge.  My favorite Hawaiian BS spot was Brennecke’s Beach, Poipu, Kauai. 8′ to 15′ outside breaks, perfect for BS, but short rides vs Sandy and Makapu’u…  Cheers

      PS.  Bruddah how big (est size) is da wave U posted?  I’m thinking 18 to 20 ft ?

      Butkus, you’re hitting my favorite spots I loved bodysurfing Makapu’u and Brennecke’s. God created  Makapu’u for bodysurfing it has to be one of the best imo, so much fun.

      Poipu is a great area and not too far from there is Barking Sands beach that was so huge the day I was there I said no thanks. The best way I can describe the surf that day was like being out to sea in a storm with huge swells coming from everywhere. I’ve never seen that before and no one was out. If I remember correctly it was around a Navy base

      Kauai is still my favorite island it’s hard to beat especially Hanalei.

        Yes, you’re right, the Navy base is Pacific Missile Base, with an airfield for jets and planes.   Located at Mana Plains, near Barking Sands Beach, and Kekaha town.  Not the traditional Navy base with a harbor for ships or boats.   Near by is Port Allen harbor where small ships can dock.  Hmm, did not know that area produce big, surfing waves?  There must have been some kind of Pacific Ocean storm and the swells hit Hawaii.

        Yeah, Hawaii has long range nuclear missiles that hit all of Asia and even Russia.  Hawaii is one deadly and lethal place…  Cheers

      I went out once at the wedge, just wearing trunks and Churchills, came back with just churchills, the webbed liner of my trunks and about a pound of sand up my ass, never again.  Was humbled and beaten down after one wave. Literally split my shorts right off me and they were hanging behind me like a tail.  The sea was angry that day.  And it was not even that crazy compared to how it can get.

        My first time to Cabo I saw the rough waves but figured F it, I’m a strong  swimmer. Waves threw me around like a rag doll. I was lucky to come out with my life. It too me 10 minutes in the shower to get the sand out of my ballss.

        Nothing funnier than watching people get washed up on the sand while sitting at the office having a breakfast drink.  That beach is very unassuming and absolutely wicked out of nowhere.  Swam once in front of the Finisterra on the pacific side, was really bad and the hotel guys came down and yelled at us to get out.  Next day we trolled all the way back to the harbor and caught a few dorado about 100 yards off the beach right in the same area. the sharks were all over it and they were huge, I think we brought in one that wasn’t bitten in half while on the line out of about ten.
