Next 3 guys on the list all were from the 1800s.  Early 1900s.  Even Joe Mc carthy was the 1930s taking over what the ya kee dynasty?

roberts gets a lot of snipes.  Yes, he has good players. Yes, the Dodgers are an amazing organization. Yes, they spend a lot of money

but I also want to recognize something else being a professional coach or manager is a high stress job  guys flip out even the most successful ones  it is hard to stay calm and steady  I remember Joe Torre was great with the Yankees and yet always felt undermined and always felt like the Yankees were trying to get rid of him. I remember Billy Martin was incredibly talented but was an alcoholic and a violent man ruined his own career  Ron Washington brilliant baseball Mann up-and-coming career had a cocaine problem  Bill Belichick won 1 million Super Bowls was one of the greatest ever and his marriage blows up and he ends up sleeping with a 19-year-old or whatever

so the credit goes to Dave Roberts for not blowing his life up for remaining a normal person for staying on top of this for not letting the pressure get to him and going out there and picking up a drug habit or sleeping with teenagers or getting in fights with the organization or his players  there is something to be said for sticking around  not being bored like Pete Carroll  got bored. and grinding day after day year after year

so I’m not sure whether Robert deserves credit for being a superlative strategic manager or whether he deserves credit for not being a fly in the ointment

all you have to do is look at the New York Mets to see a team that should be a contender. they’ve spent the money they’ve gotten players. They’ve got the fans. They’ve got the pay payroll  and yet they’ve screwed it up repeatedly  the Padres at times have probably had a better roster than the Dodgers

so while everybody can point to playoff losses because every organization has them, I think Robert has done a better job than anyone of actually cashing in on the Dodgers talent and potential more often than anyone else. Could  he has not gotten in the way or screwed things up as many managers do  people still don’t forgive Pete Carol for the Super Bowl interception at the goal line. Dave Roberts doesn’t seem to have any similar gaffs

anyway, congratulations to Dave. I have not always been his biggest fan but to show up every day to keep your house in order to play peacemaker and to get your players to play to their potential and to manage that collection of stars and egos is truly a great accomplishment
