Keymasterto me the most surprising thing in that write up is that he is the first pitcher in Phillies history with five starts of seven innings or more in a row. We all hear about the Iron Man of the past and how guys threw 180, million pitches and pitched complete games every game and you’re telling me in the last 120 years this guy in an era of pitch count has gone through the seventh inning more times in a row than anyone in history? Anyone in the Phillies history?

KeymasterYeah something seems off. either way 44 innings is pretty amazing. I wish him well but hope for selfish reasons. He stops short of number 55 that year was pretty magical for a lot of of us

ParticipantYeah, the “only guy to pitch 7 innings in 5 straight starts” factoid never had a ring of truth to it. Even if you’re only considering Phillies pitchers. I suspect it might be accurate if you changed it to “only gut to pitch 7 SCORELESS innings in 5 straight starts.”
But pitching 7 innings, prior to 1980, was no big deal. The top starters all had 25-30 complete games per year.
It took me 30 seconds to Google “most consecutive complete games Phillies” and come up with this:
https://www.mlb.com/news/roberts-17-inning-outing-defines-illustrious-career/c-38773650
The short version is that Robin Roberts once pitched 28 consecutive complete games for the Phillies. In one of them he pitched 17 innings.
Through the 60s and early 70s, I would say it was unusual for any frontline starter not to pitch 7 innings in 5 straight starts.

KeymasterAnd it’s funny because Robin Roberts was the very one I was thinking of that had to have done it. And it appears he made a career of doing it
