ParticipantGreetings everyone. This is not meant to advocate any stance but rather just for informational discussion.
Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge are this generation’s greatest ballplayers (perhaps Mike Trout if he could stay healthy) and obviously, in the discussion if not the very best players in baseball and likely HOF bound.
Which led me to wonder which players that in their day would have been in the discussion of being the best player in baseball (even for a short period of time of a couple of years) and did not make the HOF?
Two that came to mind were Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy. I’m not advocating for either btw as they were great but not for a long enough period of time to be HOF worthy. Skills erode, injuries happen, etc.
What about the best pitcher in baseball for a short period of time? Doc Gooden?
Other players?

ParticipantWell we now know why Big Mac, Sosa and Sheffield aren’t in the HOF.
Excellent memory and choices in JR Richard and Orel.I would add: Ron Guidry, Madison Baumgarner and Jake Arrieta.

ParticipantIf the topic is limited to players who at one point were in the “best player in baseball” discussion and then flamed out or got hurt, consider:
Josh Hamilton (who actually WAS the best player for a year or two — before the Angels got him)
Tony Conigliaro
Fred Lynn
Jose Canseco
Darryl Strawberry
