I always wonder how the people sat by and let their countrymen commit such atrocities. How could they not say something, how could they not fight? How did this evil get to be so powerful and persuasive? And then I look to what we are seeing here in 2023 in the United States and I get my answer. I guess the horrific stories told, the monuments, the museums, the shame, the outrage is simply not enough to keep things from repeating themselves.

Solzenhitsyn said they did what they did. It doesnt make it OK to slaughter them en masse, but after fighting communists in the streets for close to a decade and having soviet bolsheviks try to destroy democracy and take over, many people had enough. they got the blame. The Israelis actions of pure retribution while understandable are not ethically much better.
