I posted earlier that a similar poll in the late 90s had them at number 11. That seems pretty high considering only one national championship, but it was a similar AP poll, and UCLA finished ranked in the AP quite often in the 20th century.
That's the only thing that's keeping them afloat in polls like this today. Because, like you said, the past 25 years have been shit, with the exception of about a half dozen seasons.
Unfortunately, don't expect UCLA to finish as a ranked team for quite some time, given their move to the B1G. Just too tough of a schedule moving forward.
I do enjoy how it's ancient history that keeps you Trojans all warm and cozy at night as it's probably been 8+ years since you had a season worth smiling about.
Speaking of history, I enrolled at Oregon in the early '80s knowing it was a bottom feeder football program along with the likes of UTEP, Kansas and Northwestern back in those days (remember the old weekly Steve Harvey Bottom 10 football programs list? We were regular entrants along with Oregon State).
So you see, I didn't inherit a school that was already a historical football power. Instead it was probably one of the historically worst football programs in the west, and suffered through things like rainy UW games at Autzen filled 75%+ with Dawg fans who had driven down from Seattle, a 0-0 Civil War game, and no bowl game since 1963.
But.....just think how amazing it must be to be a duck fan these days. First the Bellotti years which gave us quacks hope, then the Chip years that showed we could be nationally relevant and compete for national championships. And now this, a promise of an even more upward trajectory and riches yet to come all thanks to Dan Lanning.
Nope. You can't even imagine being a pauper fan like we were back then, and trust me, I get it. Enjoy your glorious past, Trojans, it is really quite impressive. But it's apparently all you have.
Money is more a part of the college football landscape since the BCS came into being (read "TV ratings") than ever before. Lucky for us quacks, that dovetailed with Phil's growing interest in helping to make Oregon a football power. You Trojans need to get all of your thousands of multi-million dollar donors, you know you have them, to start contributing more maybe.
Not our problem that your alumni don't care enough about USC football collectively or don't see how the landscape has changed in the past 2+ decades, and how they can no longer sit on the sidelines to have championships magically appear. This is 2024, not 1974.
Your current NIL debacle at USC is quite telling of the current atmosphere there with your donors....
Consider USC All-time vs. teams listed above it here:
USC Record all-time vs::
2-6 vs Alabama
13-10-1 vs Ohio State
4-3-1 vs Oklahoma
6-4 vs Michigan
37-51-1 vs Notre Dame (11-11 since 2000)
Only losing all-time records are to Alabama and Notre Dame of the teams listed above it. Trojans should be ranked higher......but are paying the price for the last 20 years as far as perception.
That doesn't help, but the AD isn't entirely dependent on state money or even UC money. Donors play a huge part, and neither UCLA nor KAL really measure up.
And, as we've recently seen, the Regents can hold either program hostage in other ways.
They're talking about all-time, and the AP polls go back to about 1936. At the turn of the century, a similar poll had UCLA at #11. Based on how well the team did overall (albeit only one national title) in the last half of the 20th century, that made some sense, and it should be noted that the ten teams ahead of them at the time were all regular national title contenders, with multiple titles.
Obviously the 21st century has not been kind to UCLA, but this poll does include a lot of years in which you were either unborn or unaware that UCLA football used to be very competitive.
True. For some reason, UW has really struggled against UCLA for the past 30 years. The head to head was much closer back then.
But that 2022 game was more of the 2nd Qtr game. I have never, ever seen such a bad quarter of football in my life. Like a Jr High team running around just blowing everything. What was it...0-21 just in the 2nd qtr? UW came back late, but too late losing by 8 points.
Look right to me. In the last 15 years USC and ND have been struggling making top 10 rankings which affected this Greatest Program rankings.
UCLA is in the Top 18 even after throwing away most of the past 25 seasons. With better hires they would be top 15 right now, at least.

The AP had way to many east coast biased sportswriters who always hated you know who.

Quack on! 😎
Nike is very obviously a nouveau riche johnny-come-lately. Thank gawd for slave labor.

UCLA does not deserve to be on this list at all.
Can't really argue with that one, UCLA is a bit high though, would have put them in 21 or 22.
