Ucla has signed some great players over the years from Texas. I recall Donahue landing Kevin Williams the #1 running back in the nation. Derrick looks like a versatile playmaker.
How He'll Fit in at UCLA: "UCLA can always use playmakers, and in McFall, the Bruins have landed one. He possesses elite speed and quickness, and fits in as a Demetric Felton or Kazmeir Allen type, with the ability to play in the backfield or line up in the slot. Saying those two names should tell you how he'll fit -- this is a guy who has a role easily analogous to two guys that Chip Kelly used well during their time at UCLA. What's more, UCLA doesn't really have any quick backs anymore, so McFall may find an easier path to the field in his first year or two playing a sort of scat back/lightning back role. Allen and Felton both went through years when they were more receiver-like, and then more running back-like, and we'd anticipate the same for McFall, who has similar versatility. Beyond that, he's an easy candidate to be a kick and punt returner with that feel for open field running and, again, that pretty elite speed."
“It was coach Jerry who offered me,” McFall said. “He loved my tape and reached out and offered me while he was on vacation and that meant a lot to me. Then I had some great talks with Chip Kelly and he told me they how much they liked me and I could have a big impact in their offense.
“They want to use me in the backfield, in the slot, out wide and even returning kicks. DeAnthony Thomas at Oregon was a player I liked a lot growing up and they said they want to use me in a similar way and that got me excited.”
As mentioned, McFall has yet to visit UCLA but he does have an official date locked in.
“I’ll be there October 7 when they host Washington State,” McFall said. “That works out schedule wise so I’m really excited to get down there and see the school close up for myself.
“Like I said though, I’m already very comfortable and familiar with the area out there. This is a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get started.”
McFall is a four-star prospect on 247Sports and in the 247Sports Composite and has some intriguing upside to him for sure.
He has explosive speed and is shifty with the ball in his hands. He’s a player with big play ability and his positional versatility should help him to see the field early on as a Bruin.
