Bob Stoops, Chris Peterson, Donte Williams

    in WildWest Football Board

Peterson is 55 I think. Stoops 61. Williams young, black, good recruiter and already in the program.

Stoops-good CEO, could adopt present staff. Got young coaches at OK and adapted O, Lincoln Riley. Even as he aged found good coaches. Could not win big games and Choklahoma was a phrase.

Peterson-one of two coaches to go to the CFB playoff from the PAC. Program builder. Solid. Not flashy. Not LA at all. Might take awhile being 2 years out to form his own staff. And he likely would want to. Not the type to take over others coaches. Not a huge personality but a clean guy, safe guy, teams would be solid.

Williams-all attributes listed above and likely keeps many of the coaches now. Probably keeps recruits too.

who do you pick and why?

I like the idea expressed by Joe Klatt and two of the guys he mentioned...Jeff Hafley and Josh McDaniels....if they can't get the guys no one expects would even consider leaving their current jobs

His name is Petersen, just memorize the spelling. I'm hoping for Donte Williams, perfect coach for USC, a bad DB coach with no experience that specializes in recruiting which USC doesn't need much in that department. Petersen would be an awful hire for UCLA, all that talent going to a top 3-5 coach would have the Trojans back. Stoops has a great resume as well haven't followed him that closely but his teams are usually real good.

Williams can't even be in the running. Time to stop promoting unqualified assistants and go for the home run hire. Petersen would be worth the risk, that risk being if he still has a heart for coaching.

@August West If I am betting, and this is pulling this out of my rear. I would say Donte 50%, and then following that. Hmmmm, I'll say Fickell and then Fleck then Stoops. I think the longer this goes on, the less chance Stoops or Peterson is the guy. Don't you? If they wanted it and they wanted him, it would happen fairly fast. Longer it goes I think we are looking at an active coach. I don't see Franklin happening. I don't see Peterson. Mayyyyybe Fleck. Fickell makes total sense. I don't see Matt Campbell. Maybe the Clemson OC. I really don't want more USC or NFL retreads. We have seen the JR, Hackett movie before and I didn't like it.

@Java Completely agree the longer it goes, definitely less chance for the two guys not currently employed. I think Bohn’s first choice is Fickell, but IMO, with UC going to the B12, I think Fickell stays put. Already built a program that’s going to be P5. If UC wasn’t moving up, Id say the chances would be greater that he comes over.

I think Franklin and Fleck are somewhat in the mix, but will not make the finals.

If Fickell, Stoops and Petersen don’t take it…then the direction Bohn goes is a complete unknown. We could get anyone from Lincoln Riley to Kyle Whittingham to Gus Malzahn.

Urban Meyer said JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Scratch Urban Meyer off the list of candidates for the USC football job.

The Jacksonville Jaguars coach said Wednesday that there was "no chance" he'd leave the NFL for that job, which came open when USC fired coach Clay Helton on Monday.

"I'm here and committed to try to build an organization," Meyer said.

What about someone from out of left field? I'll give 2:1 odds you guys get someone not mentioned here and who you initially HATE, but end up loving.....a la Pete Carroll.

At least you Trojans are off the "gotta have a head coach connected in the past with USC" bandwagon....jeez.

Or maybe you should just change that to "gotta have a head coach connected in the past with Oregon". JR and John McKay say hi.

    In order

    Petereson

    Peterson

    Peterson

    or bust

Stoops is an absolutely STUPID alternative. He is tight to Oklahoma, wouldn't fit in LA and doesn't need the LA glitz.

I know nothing about Williams but USC needs someone that has a track record of success not another Kiffin which had raw talent and was a reach.

Let’s look at the roster of potential coaches for USC

Luke Fickell. He’s got a 1-4 record against ranked teams; I did not count 2020 which wasn’t really a season. He beats no one on a regular basis. Cincinnati plays what looks to be a pretty average ND in South Bend Oct 2, we’ll see how he does there.

Bob Stoopes. He’s 61, pass, don’t want to get another coach in 5 years

Chris Petersen. No Boise State coach has done shit away from BSU though Petersen wasn’t too bad at UDUB. He quits because he was burned out. He isn’t a big city person, he’s prickly to the media, he’s not a fit for USC and I’m not sure he even wants to coach again. He was pretty critical of USC’s depth before the Stanford game on his FOX gig.

PJ Fleck. Has done wonders at Minnesota but he’s an oddball.

James Franklin. His statement after the death of thug George Floyd and other blacks “My heart is broken, my beliefs have been challenged and my emotions are raw. These senseless deaths are a symptom of a larger problem and in moments like this, silence is deafening indifference. Our country is at a critical point and it’s imperative when the road is bumpy, the path convoluted, the reality heartbreaking, we remember who and what We Are.” This alone makes him a WOKE Folt favorite, we’ll forget about the rapes that happened under his watch at Vandy or this

“ Former Vanderbilt University football coach James Franklin changed his story Wednesday about whether he had seen a video of what police say was a sexual assault on a student by four former football players in June of 2013.

Franklin, testifying via Skype during a pre-trial hearing for four former players facing rape charges, said he gave players the impression he had seen the video to emphasize the seriousness of the situation.

"I spoke as if I had seen the video because I was angry and upset and didn't want to water down the message to them," said Franklin, now the head coach at Penn State University.

Franklin said he had not then — and still has not — seen any video evidence, a change from what he has said before.

"Coach Franklin: Did you lie?" asked defense attorney John Herbison.

    "No sir," Franklin said.

Wonder what WOKE Carol thinks about that ?

Matt Campbell. He gets raves but his record at Iowa State isn’t great. 3-9, 8-5, 8-5, 7-6 and a 9-1 during the pandemic. He’s beaten some good teams, lost to average teams and has never beaten Iowa. Think this guy wants a bigger gig in the Big 10.

Jack Del Rio. Please no, no more former USC players or assistants for at least 100 years. He’s the DC for the Washington No Names, they gave up 420+ to the Chargers Sunday at home, they have how many 1st round picks on that D ?

Mario Cristobal. Could you see Bohn offering him the gig ? I don't think so and he wouldn't take it anyway.

Urban Meyer. If Folt left and the BOT had a massive change over to non-WOKE people, this might happen, lol.

Please stop.....Stoops is 61yo, nothing left in the tank, Stoops was at a "sacred media cow" institution like Oklahoma. Easy League. In the "soft Nebraska era" + Soft schedule every year until year end. Central time zone (loved by East Coast media). Cushy job. Pete beat the sh*t out of him.....EXPOSED him. Likely a 2nd time around "re-hash" like JRII.....soft in retirement. That is a big risk. Not the right guy.

Neither is Peterson...burned-out @ UW and left coaching...borderline too old @56... (+Mormons don't do well in SoCal/Hollywood)..but I like him as a coach.

Urban Meyer - 57 years old. Burned out also. Troubled by a brain cyst. Like Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer is the "roots" of an amazing coaching tree.

Donte Williams - 39 years old. Rising star. Not permanent HC material......not now @ USC. Not married. "Baby daddy" to a son. Engaged to the baby's mom (not great optics @ USC for HC). Idaho State degree in communications. A gritty, hard-working battler. great relationship builder. Great Future.

Luke Fickell is our guy. Former Nose Guard at Ohio State, where he had a school-record 50 consecutive starts at NG. 48yo....in his coaching "prime" (Pete Carroll was 51 when USC hired him). Luke was named Interim Head Coach at Ohio State in 2011 when Jim Tressel resigned. Coached under Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. Turned lowly UofCincinnati into a recurring Top 20 Program. Trophy family. Trophy wife. Midwestern values. Devout Catholic. Relatively low $$ buyout. Great Charisma. Team-builder. Up and comer....who is arriving "now' on the big stage. Bohn knows firsthand how Luke works. Already vetted him.

According to Klatt and Cowherd ...Fickel is not a fit for where football and USC should be headed and Fickel is a midwest guy waiting for an opening at either Ohio St or Michigan.....Fickel does not have NFL DNA and what he meant about that is the coach under todays game needs to not be the star of the program but the players need to be the star of the program...he mentioned Pete Carroll who was a star HC. but he played second Fidel to Reggie and Matt....he also felt some guys can take the LA scene and not lose focus others can't...Fickel is a midwest guy who doesn't fit.

Stoops is already HOF, his record speaks for itself. You play in enough big games, you’re gonna have some losses. Even Saban has been handed a few whoopins.

Petersen, another whose record speaks for itself. Took UW to the playoffs. Played Bama as close as possible with the talent differential.

Donte is a complete non starter. Zero HC experience. No more training wheels. Time to hire an adult.

I highly doubt those will be the only names.

USC has been embarrassed by its prior two coaches and prior 2 Athletic directors. the last Ad was actually Free. And he extended fat boy‘s contract to a weis-fat like 5 year 25 million guaranteed contract. OUCH!!!!!

you get what you pay for.

    All were LAZY hires.

my guess is this will be a thorough process.

the soft substitute teacher was just shown the door after his incompetence could no longer be defended by Lord Sanka.

it will be a solid hire. Time will tell.

Stoops easily if those are the only choices. He has been to the mountain top, won 80% of his games at Oklahoma and perennially competed. Pete Carroll taking him behind the woodshed is a long lasting memory but I will have to get over that. Stoops went to a bowl game each and every one of his 18 years at chokelahoma. 10 of those were BCS bowls where he went 4-6. He is only 61, he can go for another decade. Donte will be the DC where Stoops can mentor him. Coach Pete seems to beca poor fit, one dry personality. But even then I would not fax complaint letters to HH if they hired coach Pete.
