Question. If the 45 people at the watch party at Pasadena's mansion are watching the game on 5 different tv's, and if Pasadena is streaming it on his iPad - how many "viewers" does that count towards the Nielson's?
USC UCOnn drew 6.72 million. Prior to LSU Iowa the most watched womens game was USC Louisiana Tech, 1983 championship game featuring Miller as a freshman with the McGee twins, 11.8 million. The highest rated , ie the number of tv’s tuned in, was for USC Texas, 1986 championship game at 6.5.
With the crowds usc began to see. And the ratings. Means there are a lot of women and curiosity seekers out there
What this means for usc? That university smells money like nothing I’ve ever seen. If they can make money off the product they’ll invest in it. They did 40 years ago and won. But didn’t make $. So they abdicated to Tennessee and UConn who actually helped build the women’s game to eventually include top programs like Stanford. Notre dame. Baylor. LSU. And now iowa ucla and South Carolina. Now that you have a dozen programs capable of winning a natty nationwide you really have a product and market
Caitlin Clark is a uniquely gifted and entertaining player. I'm not sure the women's game is now going to take off, but it will have improved viewership numbers from her fumes over the next season or two. It boils down to Clark's ability to hit deep threes off the dribble including step-backs. Something no other woman has ever shown, and not that many men frankly. It's a sight to see, almost unbelievable.
All the pressure is on JuJu now to take the mantle. But her game is more of a complete game, and a skillset a few women have had previously without making much of a dent in total viewership, e.g. Taurasi, Cheryl Miller.
Clark also leads the country in assists and pulls down several rebounds per game, while leading the country in scoring average, so I would argue that Clark has the more complete game.
Most watched game in NCAA history, men's or women's and only a few NBA finals games exceeded that number. Take that, Java.

A lot of USC haters will still watch USC

I posted sometime back when SC and UCLA played each other it was in front of sold out crowds in LA both times, something the men’s teams could not do.
Media Hype works. sc
