With regards to the USC defensive Line

By: MJDavidson

things might not be quite what they first appear to be.

No question, USC whiffed on prototypical defensive tackles and nose guards in this recruiting class. Having said that, if one really looks at the films closely, and then realizes what kind of offenses SC faces for the most part in the Pac-12, then perhaps the picture changes.

The kid Morgan Breslin is terrific and he will play alot at DE--he is too quick and his motor is too strong not to see the field. Williams, otoh, is not only a stud, he is alreadly BIG  and will likely  be much bigger soooner than later. He is also very fast.  This is a guy who will likely see significant time as a true frosh and he will either  play inside on some obvious passing downs, or he will allow one of the current defensive ends to move inside in passing situations.   An acquaitance of mine spoke to Monte Kiffin about that scenario at the recruiting dinner, and when asked about moving Williams inside, all Monte did was smile.

Some of the best defenses around are built around speed, talent and depth. Although SC does not have tremendous inside depth, they have some. Having recruited some off the wall talent will allow USC to compensate on the inside quite well. Remember, Cody played only 9-10 years ago and he was very effective inside and he was NO BIGGER than Williams in his first year and he had no problem beating his guy time and time again. History is about to repeat itself. MJD
