Hu's talked about this. USC was arguably "overtalented" in the latter part of Carroll's run. Excellent players 2-3 deep at every spot. Sometimes you need some development guys who bust their tails and who will be good in the future but aren't there yet. They're glue guys, they keep perspective and effort/competition flowing.

And a guy like that keeps the Haden types satisfied that at least SOMEONE on the team can pull off a 3+ GPA that isn't just a walk-on.
