Here's what can be said

Since he hasn't "won" anything (yet)

At every stop he's tangibly, unquestionably provided dramatic improvement in record and quality of play

His teams play hard, every game

There has been almost no evidence to doubt him or poke holes in his game

Every where he goes the place has that "ascendant" feel I like, he's found a way to take each program to that very elusive sweet spot, and he does it in a hurry

And he's done it at places (except USD) that are not used to winning and have to be taught that winning attitude, which is more difficult at a Stanford than at a USC or Alabama where even in the worst years, in the back of their minds the players still think they can win championships. I don't think Stanford's players had any inkling they'd actually do anything significant for the program or in the college football world at large, and I don't think the 49ers players did, either. He changed a mindset at each place.

That said, he's always going to have his critics because as we're doing right now, we compare him to Carroll. They're both outsized personalities that grate on people particularly the longer they stick around. They engage their douchebag side regularly and without shame. Sometimes its alright but its usually more annoying. So, he's become polarizing. Just like he was as a player.
