I see it this way....

Jim Harbaugh...as a pro coach he is still a neophyte....and walked into a team in the 49ers that were set up for a good year. They were 8-8 three seasons ago but fell to 1-6 starting out the next year. They finished that one with 5-4 record for 6-10 overall. They had the nucleus and still do of a very good defensive team. They played in the weakest division of the NFC but also were a team that doesn't make mistakes, a Harbuagh team trademark.

Pete Carroll at seattle had taken over a terrible team that was a shables on both sides of the ball...he also got that team into the NFL second round that first year despite a bad QB. He has also taken a much less proficient defense team he inherited and mde it a top 10 D this year. But Harbuagh is offense minded but in college that wasn't the case much with Stanford his first 2 years (4-8, 5-7) until Andrew Luck took over at QB. Jim hadnt got Stanfordto .500 overall until year 4.  Pete had USC in full gear by year 2..not year 4...A first year record is not sufficient to come to conclusons on a pro career IMO...
