How Good is Harbaugh?

By: Toss sweep

the emergence of the SF 49ers this season and the turn around of a floundering Stanford program put the spotlight directly on the coach, Jim Harbaugh. Now I met his sister at the Crysler Corps Auburn hills design center 15 or so years ago and according to her he is "crazy as a bag of snakes" whatever that means! Hence I look at him with a jauncdiced eye.  But a look at his record and methods can give some insight into how good this guy is at the head coaching gig.

His first head coaching job was at div-1aa University of San Diego where he went: 7-4 in 2004(taking over from a 8-3 team the previous year), then 11-1,and 11-1 league champs the following two years. Not shabby!

Next Jim takes over a 1-11 Stanford team and goes: 4-8, 5-7, 8-5', 12-1 and off to the 49ers. What is significant to me is how he won. No gadgets, no June Jones/Mouse Davis trickery just old fashion football. Whats more impressive is what he gets out of players. The upset of the century where a 30+ point underdog Stanford beats USC with Tavita Pritchard at QB!!!

Now he has done it again with Alex Smith at QB. He gets all you can get out of his players and going 14-3 with the 49ers is no fluke as I pick them to beat the NY Giants next week.

I think that Pete Carroll was a great College Coach but I think that Harbaugh is a better all around coach and will prove it over and over these next few years!
